I honestly can't think of a cover I favor over this.

Worst Cover: Fascination Street - The Cure ---> Metronomy

I would like to offer up The Cult's 1987 cover of Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild as worst cover.

Good covers:

Twist and Shout - The Beatles, 1963 (Top Notes, 1961)
Oye Como Va - Santana, 1970 (Tito Puente, 1963)
You're No Good - Bob Dylan, 1962 (Jesse Fuller, 1959)
Cocaine - Eric Clapton, 1977 (J.J. Cale, 1976)
Willie and the Hand Jive - Eric Clapton, 1974 (Johnny Otis, 1971)
Route 66 - The Rolling Stones, 1964 (Nat King Cole, 1946)
Let the Good Times Roll - Brad Paisley & BB King, 2008 (Louis Jordan, 1946)
I Put a Spell on You - Creedence Clearwater Revival, 1968 (Screamin Jay Hawkins, 1956)
Big Bad Bill - Van Halen, 1982 (Margaret Young, 1920s or 30s)
Hoochie Coochie Man - The Allman Brothers Band, 1970 (Muddy Waters, 1954)
Call Me the Breeze - Lynyrd Skynyrd, 1974 (J.J. Cale, 1971)
Stay All Night - Willie Nelson, 1973 (Bob Wills, 1945)
Move It on Over - George Thorogood, 1978 (Hank Williams, 1947)
Respect - Aretha Franklin, 1967 (Otis Redding, 1965)
Rock Island Line - Johnny Cash, 1957 (Kelly Pace, 1930s)
Statesboro Blues - Taj Mahal, 1968 (Blind Willie McTell, 1928)
Piece of My Heart - Big Brother & the Holding Co, 1968 (Erma Franklin, 1967)
Hard to Handle - The Black Crowes, 1990 (Otis Redding, 1968)
Shake Your Moneymaker - Fleetwod Mac, 1968 (Elmore James, 1950s?)
Guitar Man - Elvis Presley, 1968 (Jerry Reed, 1967)

All these are recordings where the cover is better than the original. THAT, of course, is a matter of taste though.

Nick Cave- Avalanche
Thin Lizzy- Whiskey in the Jar
CCR- Cotton Fields
Muse- Feelin Good
The Feelies- Paint it Black
Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris- Love Hurts
Mississippi John Hurt- Poor Boy, Long Ways From Home
and obviously Johnny Cash- Hurt

Does anyone else think Big Star's Holocaust should be considered a cover of Yoko Ono's Mrs. Lennon. Its almost an identical melody, granted the lyrics are totally different, but its almost an exact arrangement of instruments as well.

Hm, I didn't even know that was a cover. Who's the original by? I just downloaded it last week.

EDIT: Nevermind, just looked it up. It's a showtune, and likely one I've heard before since there was something familiar about the song.

Anyway, let me add:
Cat's In the Cradle - Harry Chapin (1974) --> Ugly Kid Joe (1993)
Easy - The Commodores (1977) --> Faith No More (1992)

Catherine Wheel - Wish You Were Here

Therapy? - Diane (Husker Du)
Amazing album too -- so underrated.

Respect has been mentioned before, but another cover I like is by Adeva from 1989 (Otis Redding, 1965)

I prefer Lenny's original version of this one. If you haven't heard the 1988 live version (as released on the 1994 compilation Cohen Live) I would recommend to do so.
