oh god it's so goddamn good

Look, did Black Dog/Rock & Roll/Stairway/Going To California get overplayed to death? Absolutely. But think of it outside of that, try and remember the first time you heard those songs, this whole album. I remember, and I remember I couldn't get enough of it, it was gorgeous, everything about it. Rock & Roll rocked hard, When The Levee Breaks has an awesome riff, and Stairway is a fucking masterpiece, I mean a straight up masterpiece of a song. I still get goosebumps every time I hear that guitar solo at the end, and I've heard that song at least a hundred or so different times. This is my second favorite Zeppelin album, but I could very much be convinced into it being my favorite, though I just love their debut so much. This was the album that launched me into Zeppelin and I'm forever grateful to it and forever connected to it for that.

It's good. I really don't understand its status, though. Not really sure what else to say. Stairway to Heaven is great and so is Levee, but the rest is just solid and nothing really beyond that. They have better records than this, and even still, none of those are totally consistent. Led Zeppelin are a great "songs" band but they never really made an album consistent in quality or mood. I really do adore some of their stuff though. Their albums just don't deserve all the praise they get in my opinion.

EDIT: Oh and of course Going to California is great too, and my favorite on the album. Not sure how I forgot it. Most of their acoustic-based songs are great and a lot better than their harder ones for me.

"Going to California" is not that much overplayed, at least not where I live.

Mostly agree with this. With some exceptions.

I didn't like it as much as I like it now. It grew on me...or I grew! But it's still not my favourite album by them (probably LZ I is)
The Battle for Evermore is one of my favourites by this band.

I feel like LZI is pretty consistent in mood at least, quality is obviously subjective

Yeah, you're right there. Was thinking about that afterwards. It's consistently hard, kickass blues rock, but some songs are just obviously a lot better than others for me.

One of my favourites. A great hard rock jam centred around Stairway To Heaven, with Battle of Evermore and Going to California balancing things out. One of my all time favourites.

Love the variety of moods on this album! Zep does a great job of mastering a variety of styles and making them their own. Funny how classic rock fans praise "Stairway to Heaven" so much (or "Evermore" and "Going to California") then refuse to listen to folk music.
