A very good record, even if it was all just a bit too pretentious. The last good one (IMO) before their commercial phase (which they seem to have emerged from on the last two albums).
The untitled track listing was annoying at the time, but I believe this has now been remedied with the track names being revealed some time ago. Catch up BEA...

This is a very emotional experience at points, ie the entire first half. The second half does have its moments though. _________________

I hear a lot of places calling this album pretentious, and I honestly don't get it at all. Is it the title? The untitled tracks? The Hopelandic singing? What makes this album any more pretentious than other Sigur Ros albums?
I personally think this is their best, but it's hard for me to put why into words. Every track takes me someplace else, yet it still feels much more cohesive than some of their other albums. I love the way the tracks blend together into one constantly-changing ocean of noise. One of the best post rock albums I've heard. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. Pretty much those two.
I don't care personally, and agree this is one of their best. It's important to remember that at the time this was released, when the likes of the Strokes and the White Stripes were flavour of the month with their stripped down short songs, your typical rock-loving music listener might have regarded Sigur Ros as indulgent, overblown and pretentious, especially if they weren't fans of post-rock already...

That's a good point. Back in 2002 I didn't know what a Sigur Ros or a White Stripe was, so it's a little hard for me to look at it from that perspective. Funny how it's aged better than most of the other rock of that period (at least in my opinion). _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. And it's harder as anything else.

Large swaths of the post-rock landscape give me this progressive-rock-like vibe of pretense of being Art with capitol 'A'. The peacock feathers can be fun to look at sometimes, but they get tiring quickly. I don't remember if I made it all the way through this one, to be honest, but my experiences with Sigur Ros have not been great so far.

Lol at all of the people that automatically call this pretentious. It isn't pretentious at all. What it is is one of the best albums ever.
Both halves are great, every song is great. The 7th track song is my personal favorite.
I am guessing there is a thesaurus somewhere that has the album cover with the word pretentious.
Sigur ros is probably the 2nd best band ever, this album is the opposite of being pretentious.
It is way better and more important than even the band members think it is.
