It's very much a product of its time, which means it should have faded over the years.
However, I wasn't too keen on it when it came out, but have rather grown to like it over the years. Joe really is a unique talent and this album shows that well. This albums is full of seething songs and frustration, but catchy and positively energetic as well. It makes for a great statement that has stood the test of time even if the sound is largely indicative of its era.
He had three good ones right in a row. This one, I'm the Man and Beat Crazy. And I love Mike's Murder too. The rest of his 80s albums are pretty good too.
It's definitely pop/new wave/rock, so his traditional audience didn't take to it. It's not classical enough for the hard core art music crowd. . Both sides were either lukewarm to panning it outright.
There is a violin, but no string section; instrumentation is more jazz than concert hall, and it even has modern jazz master trumpeter Terence Blanchard as well as rock guitar god Steve Vai. Overall, music is an interesting mix of rock/prog/jazz/and yes, a little classical.
I love it. It definitely shows another side, and adds great breadth to his musical talent. It really is amazing to see such a well rounded musician, who can do something like this as well as the excellent Look Sharp.

I didn't realize he had so many albums all the way into the 90s and 2000s. Last one I remembered was Big World. This is my favorite though, besides I'm the Man. This is from 1982.
