It's weird, because whenever I hear similar songwriting from other artists, I'm typically pretty bored by it. But there are few records I've been as obsessed with in my life. Stuart Murdoch just gets it.

A superb album. It made an indelible mark on me when I first heard it as an undergraduate student. Early B&S came up with some special stuff, before it needed a bit of a reboot, but this is possibly the best of that era (Tigermilk runs it close). I have the album cover poster on the inside of my office door at work. _________________ http://distranscontinuum.blogspot.co.uk/

A bit of the VU, a bit of Orange Juice, a bit of Paul Simon, a bit of Morrissey. This is their strongest LP, though Tigermilk and the surrounding EPs are pretty much on a par. 'Get Me Away from Here, I'm Dying' is a near perfect mix of tragedy and triumph, and super catchy to boot. They were special. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. IYFS is the high water mark for B&S. The hits just keep on coming! Infectious sing-along melodies that appear on surface to be very simplistic, repeated listens reveal a deeper complexity and magic. One of the greatest albums of ALL Time.

I have always seen Belle & Sebastian as the definition of gentle/soft music for some reason. If You're Feeling Sinister is arguably their best record.
Some of the lyrics in here are amazing and it almost seems like a tragic comedy. The vocals and the melodies are catchy as hell, but sad at the same time and indeed, you can hear a lot of VU, Simon & Garfunkel and The Smiths influences on their sound.
My favourite tracks are Seeing Other People, Like Dylan In The Movies (sick bassline), Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying (my favourite B&S Song, love it) and If You're Feeling Sinister.
"It is mightier than swords I could kill you sure, but I could only make you cry with these words"
Classic stuff.

Totally agree with the praise being heaped on this album. B and S took the great jangle pop of the 80s in completely their own direction and created something truly seminal of their own. Their early albums (and yeah EPs) are the ultimate dissalussioned teenager records (at least if you prefer something poetic rather than angsty). I think their magic is in the lightness of touch and the subtle edginess of the songs. They were almost too good to be true at the time.
Later albums are still very good, but yeah it's the first two or three that are really special.
