Bruce Springsteen is back on a rocking album full of nostalgia and the celebration and thrill of being alive. Recorded entirely live, a few overdubs aside, it is the sound of the E street band on stage and firing on all cylinders. "One minute you're gone" kicks off the record on a contemplative note but things really get going on the title track and especially the adrenaline rush of "Burnin' train", a storming track. "Janey needs a shooter" is the first of three studio recordings of songs written pre-1973 and it's a belter. It has a feel of "Backstreets" to it. It's a brilliant song. "Last man standing" refers to Springsteen himself as he contemplates the reality of being the only surving member of his first band, The Castiles. A good track. "The Power of prayer" and "House of a thousand guitars" are also fine, albeit two of the lesser tracks, and "Rainmaker" is excellent. "If I was the priest" is the second of the old tracks and is very good, a bit Dylanish, but that was where Bruce was at in the early seventies. "Ghosts" is a powerhouse of a song, perfect for those big stadiums, if that ever happens again. Then we have "Song for Orphans". If "I was the priest" was a bit Dylanish then this one takes the crown. It honestly could be Bob in his Highway 61/Blonde on Blonde period, and it has a harmonica solo too. I was actually laughing through it because it was so Dylan. It's great by the way. The record closes with the enjoyable "I'll see you in my dreams". And there we are. It's nothing particularly new, nothing we haven't heard before from Bruce, although this one is much more personal and carries more emotional weight, but it's another solid addition to the Springsteen canon and his most rocking since "The Rising". The Underside of Power does not have the immediacy of Algiers' self-titled, which is really to this record's benefit. There's more room for variety, for atmosphere, for pathos. That doesn't mean this record is without teeth. The Underside of Power announces itself with a battle cry, and does not go down without a fight. The quieter moments are engrossing, getting you in range for a point blank attack. It's long-form Pixies dynamic writing, and it works. If we're on the subject of influences, however, The Underside of Power is still drawing from post punk heroes like Joy Division, but is leaning more into the drone of Suicide, and early Swans. Algiers are going for the same aesthetic, but don't let it grow stale. Trying out some more experimental songwriting and album structuring, The Underside of Power leaves a lot to unpack, and has a bevvy of surprising turns in craft. Really though, this is still just as vital and impassioned as one could want from Algiers. I don't quite know if I like this better than their debut, which remains a miracle to this day. The Underside of Power is a beautiful, fearsome beast of a record. An essential for 2017."  [+]  Reply

Literary alt-rock with a unique lyrical P.O.V. (vs all the other alt-rock out there) with songs like "here I dreamt I was an architect" (an architect who "built this balustrade / To keep you home, to keep you safe / From the outside world"), "july! July!" ("i say your uncle was a crooked french canadian / and he was gut-shot runnin gin ") and its propulsion towards the strange, and "grace cathedral hill" and its lackluster new year's ("Some way to greet the year: / your eyes all bright and brimmed with tears. / The pilgrims, pills and tourists here all sing / "Fifty-three bucks to buy a brand new halo." "). There's a variety of instrumentation backing colin's off-kilter, off-cove vocals. The other songs are pretty good...and dark, like "leslie anne levine", a dead child who sings "my name is Leslie Anne Levine / my mother birthed me down a dry ravine / my mother birthed me far too soon / born at nine and dead at noon", or like "a cautionary tale" about a mom who whores to feed her kid ("the next time she tries to feed you collard greens, remember what she does when you're asleep"). "cocoon" overstays its welcome, but it's the only one. 10 minute closer "california one / youth and beauty brigade" ("We're calling all bed wetters and ambulance chasers / Poor pick-pockets, bring 'em in / Come join the youth and beauty brigade") never dulls and hints at epic numbers to come.
