Most of my music favorites come from art school background, and that does have a pretty pretentious persona. I think the most pretentious thing about my post was telling people who have listened to many more albums than I have what albums they should give another chance, if not a first one. Anyway, anyone can be pretentious, it just depends on the delivery, and despite that post I really do think Elston is one of the greater users on this site: he has a great sense of humor and a great taste in music (By the way, I'm not an art student, that would too awesome for me).

I came to this community to get "real people" opinions on music I have not yet listened to myself. Pitchfork, RS, AV Club etcetera don't do it for me. They have a vested interest in which albums they review and how they rate them. The Top 50 charts here have helped me to find lots of good albums which I was aware of but never would have listened to. There's lots of diversity of opinion and taste in this community which is what I value. I'm 54 and have listened to thousands of albums. Does that mean I know more or less about music than someone who has listened to 500 albums or 5000 albums? No!! And it doesn't matter because I am not here to acquire good taste in music. I'm here to find music that I like. As long as someone treats me with respect they can feel free to tell me what I should listen to (or not tell me) and I will do with the information as I choose Very Happy
