The danceable depression of Isolation. The inner, echoing dialogue between the primary vocal and the barely audible whisper on Passover. The hushed metal of Colony. The insect-mimicking sound on Atrocity Exhibition and Eternal. The forward-thinking pop-sensible drive of Means to an End and Heart and Soul. All these highlights, and there are many more, make Closer more musically interesting than Unknown Pleasures for me. And then Closer is more lyrically mature, thematically and structurally. Disorder is their best song though. #JherekoSucksDicks

Oh, this is like the best piece ever written on BEA.

The first time I heard Joy Division was the session they did for John Peel on the BBC when I was 17. The session was released on vinyl in about 1981 and the 12 inch vinyl played at 45RPM (45RPM 12 inchers always sounded better than their 33RPM counterparts).

The session the band did for Peel blew me away. If you want to hear Joy Division at their very best, this is the vinyl release to hear. At that point in time, I hadn't heard a sound like it with the exception of perhaps PIL's 'Metal Box'.

I subsequently became aware as to where they were coming from in terms of their influences (Velvets, Doors, Neu! etc). But their sound was groundbreaking to a teenager who up until that point had been raised listening to my uncle's MOR AOR collection.

On the strength of hearing that John Peel session, I bought Closer which was the first album I heard from the band. There is little to choose between this and Unknown Pleasures in my view. I opt for the former purely for sentimental reasons.
