I think I see why JJ gave up trying to reason with you.

Sorry if my view differs from yours. Is that OK with you, Shankly?

I believe RF has one point but misses another. I don't think it was ever suggested that genres have not borrowed from each other in their development and will keep doing so going forward too, so there's not much point in arguing whether rock is a mutt genre, that is pretty much agreed upon.

However, there is very much a point to look for rock in country and vice versa. If country is treated as country without acknowledging the different styles within the genre there is a high risk that people will miss out on some good music. The whole thread started because it was mentioned in the George Strait thread that someone could not stand country. If that person were to listen to George Strait to find out what country sounds like today it is very likely that they would deduce that not much has happened with the genre since Hank Williams and stop there. That is what brought about the suggestions I made to begin with as these are all examples of songs where country has moved much closer to rock, or at least rocked up the sound quite a bit. Of the current country that style is what I tend to like the most, but that takes nothing away from the songs you mention, and if the point of the thread had been "good country songs from the 2000s" I might have included one or two of them too. Likewise, if the point of the thread had been "good country songs from any decade" I would not have limited my selections to the 2000s.

I remember my father tricking me into learning how to ride a bike. But regardless how much trickery he used he couldn't get me to like lima beans. Now I don't ride a bike much but do like lima beans after all.

So if you want to learn to like country music by starting to listen to music that is more like rock, go ahead. Just don't stay in the shallow end; learn to swim in the deep end too.

By all means try the deep end, but it would be rude to push people into that end right away.

Some say that the best way to learn to swim is to jump in.

If you are willing to accept a few casualties that might work.
