If anything, I see post-rock as a sub-genre of these 2 sub-genres. And here begins the argument that genres are meaningless. I personally believe Talk Talk began as a New Wave band and just continued to expand its limitations/possibilities. |
If Talk Talk had only made SoE and LS would they still be in this tourny?
(The answer is no btw)

Polythene Pam wrote: | Congratulations. Now if you remember at the start of the tournament Harkan decided we would follow the definitions of RYM and Wiki if I recall correctly, look up Laughing Stock and Spirit, what genre are they classed as?
Also Hairymarx would have you believe Post Punk started in 69. I don't see why it couldn't be before Punk. It's just a name. |
Sorry, I wasn't familiar with these very specific rules. But, Wiki credits Spirit of Eden as Art rock, experimental rock, jazz. So, would you accept Spirit of Eden being in a Jazz tournament? The fact is, at the time of their existence, Talk Talk was called a new wave band.
If you're going to say Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are post-rock, then we can discuss that the term post-rock didn't even exist until 1994.
"The term "post-rock" is believed to have been coined by critic Simon Reynolds in his review of Bark Psychosis' album Hex, published in the March 1994 issue of Mojo magazine." —Wikipedia
I just think it's funny to dismiss a band because they don't fit a very narrow-minded definition of the genre.
And well, the very definition of the term Post-Punk means "after punk," so of course Post-Punk didn't come before Punk. We can argue about the origin of punk, but I'd argue that a genre doesn't exist until it is given a name. Hairymarx can argue that one with me
as I said before, genre-classification is ambiguous. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

I think your missing the point, I'm not interested in getting in a discussion about genres, I'm just pointing out that if you wanted to vote in the tournament based on the original rules then you should remove Spirit and LS from the equation.
Even if MBV is in as well O_o

I prefer The Colour of Spring over Laughing Stock. And I also prefer it over anything Half-Japanese did. I love Jad Fair in theory, but far less in execution.
We're also talking about a tourney that began with The National, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Iggy Pop, The Strokes, Bloc Party, Passion Pit, The Unicorns...etc _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

Okay. i understand your point. Rules are rules. We can agree to disagree. it doesn't matter in the end, because it's doubtful I vote for Talk Talk against Wire, Talking Heads, Joy Division or New Order. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

Colour Of Spring is my #1 as it blends both post-punk mentalities (lyrically and musically) with new wave foundations to create an album showing a band experimenting with their ideologies before moving onto post-rock pioneerism.
Early for me so that may make no sense.

Pre-Spirit of Eden Talk Talk still = my favourite pp/nw band. Ignoring their last 2 albums they'd still be one of my favourite bands and I'd still vote them to win this.
