As confirmed below, Captain Beefheart passed away today. Whether you like the man's music or not it's undeniable he changed music. R.I.P Mister Beefheart.

Yeah, this really is such a shame. While Trout Mask Replica isn't on my chart, it still had a huge influence on my band, Charlie N. George.

You will be missed, Van Vilet.

Safe As Milk is one of the few records that has never waned from my top 15, it will always feel profoundly personal to me, like the Cap'n is singing from under my bed. Besides those two misfires in '74, I have a spot in my blackened heart for all of his LPs.

RIP Don Van Vliet - May your culty-fringe-derelictish-following finally blossom into mainstream corporate licencing, estate controversies, and shitty mass produced tie-dye shirts.
