Indeed. Complete garbage fluff.
I like it fine. Specially at this time of year. But he released other "Christmasy" (in feeling if nothing else) songs I find way better (Mull of Kintyre, We all stand together, Pipes of peace, Once upon a long ago...). Ugly ducklings in the realm of rock music but deliciously crafted as far as pop ballads with a yuletide spirit are concerned.
C'mon. Complete garbage fluff is what popular Christmas music is all about. By popular, I'm excluding the great majestic Christmas hymns.
I agree about Mariah Carey and Jose Feliciano. Chimpunks and Band Aid are kind of obvious.
Bing Crosby did better with "Swingin' on a Star". In fact, I'd rather hear his "Meli Kelikimaka (Christmas In Hawaii)" than sit through White Christmas one more time.
Eartha Kitt's Santa Baby is better than Kylie's, although both had better songs.
Fairytale of New York is my favorite Pogues song, although I haven't heard enough of their catalog to say it's for sure the best.
Little Drummer boy has been a one-hit-wonder song for two artists. First, the definitive version by the Harry Simeone Chorale (1958) and this year by Pentatonix.
Finally, just want to mention.... Island of Misfit Toys, by Glee Cast.
