These are possibly my two favorite artists in the entire tournament, so it's painful to see them go against each other in the first round. Everyone knows both are geniuses.
I'm throwing my vote to Cohen because he's my nomination. Honestly, both artists are perfect in my eyes, but only Cohen can bring a world to tears.
What an unfortunate match up. I'm voting Waits because I've never been able to enjoy the music of Cohen's work as much, whereas Waits combines great lyricism and compositions.
I'm voting Leonard Cohen because the man has meant so much to me (I sat three hours in the down-pouring rain just to see him) and I think "Hallelujah" is quite literally one of the most perfectly written songs in the history of popular music.
But I feel dirty about it. I love Tom Waits so much. _________________ 2023 Chart
Im going with Waits not only because he made possibly my favorite album ever, but because he has one of the greatest long discographies in modern popular music, one that parades a wide array of ideas and unusual moods over the span of nearly four decades. I love Cohen and if I was going solely on the terms of who was the better wordsmith, I probably would go for him, but looking at the entire package it's Waits unquestionably, tournament favorite
I'm torn. I love them both. I have more history with Cohen, and my nationalistic gut tells me to support him. However, I've been playing a tonne of Tom Waits lately.
Ugh. I dunno. _________________ Finnegan was super bad-ass.
