I just reached the early '80s in my history project and noticed that I'd already listened to most of the Rolling Stone top 500 albums. I was curious how the year distribution compared to the BEA overall top 500, so I made a plot:

Both have the highest density of albums in the classic rock era (~1970), but BEA has another clear (and broad) peak centered around 2000. Surprisingly, BEA undervalues the late '70s (the punk boom) relative to Rolling Stone, while neither chart gives much credit to the early '80s.

Rolling Stone's list just doesn't have much to say about music from the last 20 years. This may be because they think it's too soon to judge most of those albums or it may be that they just don't like the stuff kids these days listen to... or maybe a little of both.

I don't feel like listing which albums on RS 500 I've listened to, though I know it's well over 100. But anybody with at least some knowledge of music can instantly tell the RS 500 was made to cater to its readers and sell more subscriptions. And the majority of its readers are baby-boomers who don't listen to anything post-1979. The point is, RS 500 is not be taken seriously, just like what the AFI lists and the Oscars are for movies. They have lots of good stuff on their lists, but they're primarily made by marketing decisions, which is why you rarely see anything underground or experimental. And if you do, they're usually towards the bottom, e.g. Disintegration #326.
