I find it strange that this seems to be her most acclaimed album, I find Rid Of Me and Stories From The City more exciting and substantial. However, this album has some real classics (the title track and Long Snake Moan in particular). You can clearly see the progress from her visceral blues-influenced origins into the more slick alt-rock of Stories (can't comment on Is This Desire).

after very much enjoying her first two albums, i found this one to be a disappointment at first... to me it seemed too much of a stylistic departure from the others, both in terms of the music and the new, more theatrical component to her live performances. she'd gone from being this cool, in-your-face girl with a guitar to adopting a more diva-esque persona. included in that was handing off a lot of the guitar duties to other folks after playing all or most of the guitar on the prior releases, which left me feeling like there was another layer of separation between pj and the listener.

that said, the album did eventually grow on me, but it literally took years. "c'mon billy" is the one song that grabbed me on the first listen, and "long snake moan" won me over a while later. and eventually i came to appreciate the rest of the album.

i still rarely find myself in the mood to listen to the whole album at one time, but those two songs do often crop up on playlists i make

I'm a huge PJ fan, I enjoy all of her work, and this is by far my favourite of her albums. It's interesting that she cites this as a period in her career when she had lost a lot of her sense of self and direction (and started experimenting with certain aspects of performance art during her live shows). This is way less personal than her earlier stuff as a result, in fact she has never been quite as personal again, as her first two albums.

My favourite track here is definitely Long Snake Moan. C'mon Billy is great, too. But every track is great.

This is my fave album of hers. Love it. It's so murky, messy, and strangely dissonant at times.
