This is exactly what i would have said, but his discography is chalk full of clever and insightful stuff. the eponymous is the best place to start though.

(underrated trip-hop)

Bauhaus
(get overshadowed by Joy Division and New Order)

Bright Eyes
(needs more attention outside of I'm Wide Awake, Conor is up there with Dylan and Cohen lyrically.)
