This is like a personal Bible for all lo-fi indie rock bands. A very dissonant and irreverent Bible that you would see Stephen Malkmus preaching about at your local Sunday mass. _________________
This was one of those albums that really hit me on first listen. The title track and Sister Ray are amazing and innovative, though I will admit the latter does go on for too long. The shorter tracks, especially Here She Comes Now, need more love. Overall, I like it more than Loaded, but not as much as S/T or VU&N.
Let's be frank. It's sooooo bloody exciting and to my ears a fucking genius record. The night Lou died I jumped in my automobile, drove to a leisure centre to play football, but instead sat in the car park, wound down the window and blasted the whole of Sister Ray out at full volume. It just felt like the right thing to do.
I also had I Heard Her Call My Name as my alarm ringtone for a while. Suffice it to say I was never late for work. I also played it on student/college radio at 11am in the morning and our audience immediately halved (from 2 to 1).
The whole album is gloriously scuzzy and sleazy gutter rock made using amplifiers with at least one blown valve and would be in my Top 20 if I scrapped my one album rule. Then again, VU&N and S/T would be Top 10. Also the best VU record to listen to whilst pissed up on booze. _________________ 'Reggae' & t'ing Folk 'n Stuff SHAMELESS RECORD DEALER PLUG
I was in a band named after that last track. And it was 20 years ago today that we hit the heady heights of a neds atomic dustbin support slot. Anyone want me autograph?
