I'm just curious on exactly what website are people getting lambasted for saying they like the Beatles, cause it sure isn't this one. And the idea that saying you like the Beatles (or anyone from the rock canon) is somehow not allowed or frowned upon is just wrong. Nobody on this site feels that way.

Ah gotcha. Totally dig we can talk about this... sometimes I feel it's not allowed Sad.

What exactly do you mean you feel that is not allowed ?

BEA, a website where the entire Top 100 is dadrock wank, is apparently hostile to the Beatles. This is the byline of every Beatles fan on the forums (meaning, virtually every user on the forums).

Count me out, then. I'm a Beatles fan and I don't give a shit about hostility issues, whether real, sensed or imagined.

My byline is "Let's talk music".

He was being sarcastic, mostly because every time he, or someone else, happens to say "Hey man, I don't really like the Beatles" he gets attacked for lying and trying too hard to be "artsy" or something. There's no hostility here, or at least, there shouldn't be.

I originally was stating I'm glad I'm having a respectable conversation with a fellow Beatles fan, because I have had similar discussions in the regular forums and it was filled with, they are over done and your like for them is because you have a small brain... and so I was saying finally I'm happy that I get to have a conversation about them without so much hatred interrupting it or similar... I mean people can post how they feel... it's just less motivating to have that conversation.

AND THEN TWO PAGES LATER... (while I agree with you nobody said you shouldn't be a beatles fan in the last two pages, it did just totally ruin my motivation to talk about them again).

Having said that I tried to have empathy and put myself in his shoes... I'd be equally frustrated if I read anywhere something negative about something I love. I said something negative about what he loves... albeit I wasn't purposely saying your music sucks (and I don't think that)... but what I was saying was the feeling I get when I listen to it... my honest opinion and I don't think I should be outed like an idiot asshole (I think kinder words like arrogant and ignorant were used) for giving my honest opinion... especially since my honest opinion was trying to understand an art form that is extremely neglected.

I checked out the one with the lightning and actually liked it.

Cool! Yeah the thing with that album is underneath all the electronic madness and experimentation it's really just a really well crafted psych pop album with some seriously undeniable melodies

Part One by The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band
Although it's also psychedelic it's not electronic or anything, but I feel like their approach to melody is somewhat comparable

One thing I thought could be added to your project is including some stuff from other countries.

Cała Jesteś W Skowronkach by Skaldowie

So, based on your chart, you may find this album interesting. Skaldowie were one of the most popular Polish bands in 1960s, and this is probably their finest album, from 1969. While they were obviously familiar with modern trends and you will hear the influence of Beach Boys (vocal harmonies) or folk rock, but what makes it different is the inclusion of Polish folklore. Some songs, like Malowany Dym or Z kopyta kulig rwie are directly based on Polish highlander music.

It's available on Spotify.

I think I'll put this to rest for a bit by finishing up my top 20... I still have the 70s through today to do as a survey and feel totally out of the loop on artists that have emerged since 2010

#18 Score: 90/100

I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You ...a Franklin.

Respect (100)
She took a "man's" song and made it almost a woman's rights song and AT THE SAME TIME made it way better than the original from Otis Redding. Easily one of the most soulful/funky song of the era. Everything from the drums, sax, bassline, and of course the vocals/backup vocals are all spot on... no extra clutter in the song. Solid.

Drown In My Own Tears (75)
Blues in the key of Aretha. I like it... but it's not my favorite on the album. From the heart and lyrics solid, but missing the musical element other tracks have.

I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) (100)
I love how this song starts out. That electric piano and rolling wheel sound. And then... that hook with the title of the track... it's so musically BAM!!! to me. Her "pink" voice (something I heard a singer I worked with once talk about... "she's got that pink voice")... in other words powerful/big/loud/soulful.

Soul Serenade (85)
The horn section is kinda what makes this song for me. Electric piano is nice, and well of course her soulful singing (hehe, soul serenade=soul singing... ok that was lame).

Don't Let Me Lose This Dream (70)
60s vibe here... almost like the way to san jose. Reminds me of a type of Latin beat, but not sure what it is. While it musically adds a level to the album/shakes it up a bit and I do like the chorus... the overall song is just a bit to much.

Baby, Baby, Baby (90)
Those backup singers really make this for me more than anything else somehow.

Dr. Feelgood (100)
Something a little sexy. Starts out a little slow, but builds real nice. I like the church organ meets soul organ. Gets real a little after 2 minutes.

Good Times (100)
Classic cover. Nice change up to be a little more lively.

Do Right Woman - Do Right Man (90)
Dig the bass intro. Possibly one of the most soulful songs on the record. LOVE the backup singers. Chorus is just so full of heart.

Save Me (100)
This has a bit of rock n' roll to it, so that mixed with Aretha... and well... you get a high score. Some early funk/soul party?

A Change Is Gonna Come (70)
Not quite Same Cooke... but I like how this breathes lyrically.

Overall Experience

I'm a sucker for soul/funk music like this. I feel they tap into the human element more than any other genre. It seems so real and emotional... true heart, and not contrived. At least that's how it feels to me.

One of the few melismatic singers that I don't feel isn't putting you on... kind of like a good solo with a guitar... too many notes and it looses magic for me. She's all magic.

It's also the first record with a tinge of feminism to it, that I really like. Do Right Woman and Respect are some great examples.

#19 Score: 90/100

Santana by Santana

"Waiting" (80)
The rhythms, the unique guitar tone, the organ... just a symphony of Latin rhythms, Santana's unique guitar tone and organ.

"Evil Ways" (100)
Love how those drums pan in the beginning. Chill, but layered in simple complexity. Then explodes into awesomeness.

"Shades of Time" (80)
I get a bit of a Cream feel vocally from this.

"Savor (instrumental)" (80)
Love the layers of rhythm. It tickles my brain and gets my soul riled up. What I want in music.

"Jingo" (100)
Probably favorite track of the record. Those deep bass sounds are almost like a little eerie, and love it. Then comes the organ. It's like this death march/funeral procession. And then explodes the guitar.

"Persuasion" (90)
Love the vocals and rhythms and octaves from the bass. Dig the chorus and then post chorus breakdown.

"Treat (instrumental)" (85)
Wow, that's some mean/soulful piano playing. Makes me want to find out who plays keys with him. Same as organist cause that's just as important as his guitar playing, imo. Like how this builds and dies down/good dynamics.

"You Just Don't Care" (80)
Rad bass line in the beginning with that organ. Turn around and the bass probably makes this record for me.

"Soul Sacrifice (instrumental)" (90)
Wow, just the explosive percussion on this... Great way to close a record with so much musical energy.

Overall Experience

Pretty sad to see this so low on the charts. I had never listened to this record before this experience. My mom saw Santana and we had a best of collection growing up... but this really is a great record. I feel Santana is on par with Jimi Hendrix in the sense that his guitar playing is equally his personality and he's got a great band. He's got that same chill vocal too. But then he has these explosive instrumentals. It's like latin Jazz and Jimi Hendrix had a baby (yes I realize how simplistic and cliche that sounds, but that's how I feel).

I also enjoyed our discussions. It was the first time I felt I actually connected with someone online and communicated between two beings. There was some kind of mutual connection instead of miscommunication/etc.

Well, I posted on the first page and sort of took a break from BEA—and I come back to, well, this. There’s a lot I disagree with from the onset, a lot of things said I really oppose (as a listener and a creator of music), but a lot of this seemed like harmless introspection about the bigger hits of the era with some exceptions. I wonder if Seth ever got to reading the charts I posted on the first page and used them?
