The Beatles were the most important progressive band in the rock era, as they translated those ideas into popular rock music. Though the sounds they initiated do not fit into the classical idea of "prog" as Genesis or Yes. But they used mellotron, had extended suites, dabbled classical Indian, musique concrete, odd time signatures, backward collages and whatever they got there hands into. Songs like "Eleanor Rigby", "Love You To", "For No One" and "Tomorrow Never Knows" are all very progressive songs on Revolver.

The Beatles and the Moody Blues are the biggest influence on the classic prog sound.
