I think this is just about their best album. I think I may have over-listened to Chutes Too Narrow over the years, but this one still sounds fresh.

I'd call Port Of Morrow Mercer's weakest album. That's not to say I don't like it, but it has maybe 4 or 5 forgettable tracks, which I wouldn't say about any of his other albums. About half the album is great, and half is kind of bland. The Rifle's Spiral, Bait And Switch, No Way Down, and September are all standouts in my opinion.

I'd say that The Shins' new album that just came out a couple weeks ago, Heartworms, is considerably better. It's not quite on the level of the first 3, but it's not far off. Song's like Name For You and Half A Million stand up to anything else he's written.

Also, if you've never heard the album "When You Land Here, It's Time To Return" by Flake Music (it's just The Shins before they called themselves that), I'd highly recommend checking it out. It's easy to hear his songwriting chops even before the band found any real success. They came out with a remastered version of it a couple years ago, it's a great album in it's own right.

Thanks, Pearljammer. I'll switch my attention to that Flake Music album. Port of Morrow really wasn't doing much for me after two spins. Couple of fun, poppy songs as you mentioned but nowhere close to their first three.

Peace.

That opener is so amazing that the rest of the record can't help but feel slightly disappointing in comparison.

My friend has the back of this record framed on a wall - it has no words. He likes the music, but the art better.
