Talking Book was the first studio album I ever heard from Stevie. Definitely hooked me into his sound and style. I'd recommend TB as a good place for someone to start with him because it's a great album but also a definite precursor to better things to come with Innervisions and SITKOL.

Really great - it has an earthier sound than Innervisions, and has some killer songs, not least the stone cold classic that is Superstition. It also closes particularly strongly. I concur AAL that it is a great starting point too...

And how many artists blatanly ripped off the trumpet hook from Superstition?

I never understood the notion that Songs in the Key of Life was great. It was over by then for him. By time of Fullfillingness there was a huge dropoff in quality from Innervisions and Talking Book. These two are the great ones. Even Music of my Mind is better. All three had those certain qualities that Songs didnt. It just didnt.

Songs In The Key of Life is number one on my chart. I'm coming at this with my mind very made up, but regardless, I'm interested in hearing more of why you think it's not great. I don't usually see that opinion of Songs from people. I think SITKOL is a masterpiece and probably the record Stevie wanted to make for 10 or 12 years. Talking Book and Innervisions are much more raw and I love them for those qualities, however I think the writing, arrangements, and performances on Songs are so brilliant that the production only aids those respective qualities. I don't think it's a bad thing that they are two visibly (and of course audibly) different albums. I do agree FFF was a huge dropoff. But for me he picked right back up.
