SethMadsen provided an excellent summation for you. Parliament/Funkadelic is a must listen. They are fun, musical, influential, and especially Mothership Connection and One Nation Under A Groove, classic.

Red Hot Chili Peppers goes without saying. You don't have to like them to feel how effortlessly they feel what they are throwing down and to respect how they brought funk back to the mainstream. My pick for them would be Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Flea is at the top of his game and there isn't a note out of place from Chad in the drum department.

Also, Prince had some mighty fine and completely authentic funk moments throughout his career. Here's a series of jams from way early on that are worth listening to. You can hear the direct influence from artists like Stevie and P-Funk.

I do want to give the Red Hot Chili Peppers a listen. Specifically albums like Blood Sugar Sex Magic as well as One Hot Minute even when that album when release got panned for a good while. With Prince, I would say that he had songs that I love as well as wanting to get albums like Purple Rain. However, personally I feel that individuals like Dam Funk or Roger Troutman resonate with me more. And for the Parliment/Funkadelic, I do want to get albums like The Mothership Connection, One Nation Under A Groove and Maggot Brain even though those albums are in backlog hell with me. I do thank you for the choices.
