there've easily dropped three albums that i'll listen to 50+ times. another half dozen that'll get 20+ plays, so i'm pretty happy with how the year is going.

Yeah, I actually had a very good couple of days with some of the year's album, while I was a bit dissapointed by Grizzly Bear's recent release, feeling a bit of treading water in some places, but Christmas (or Halloween) came early this year with some obscure band putting out an album called "Science Fiction" excedeed every bleepin' expectation I could've possibly had. So I think I just need to explore some more, glass of water tastes better half-full.

New Milo left me a little unsatisfied, but maybe that's because the beats are a little less accessible and I'm tired af rn. It'd be a shame if I broke the tradition of having a Milo album in my top ten every year.

And

hooooly mooooly album art doesn't get much worse than this. Definitely a darker sound to Painting Pictures, seems he's leaving the pop sound behind for his mixtapes, but only so far through it at the moment.

I think the new one is his best but I can see what you mean about the beats.

I haven't sat down and properly listened yet - been a little distracted with Science Fiction - but did you check out his release as Scallops Hotel earlier this year? Super weird, wonderful beats, and preferred that to the bits of the new one I have heard.

I hadn't the faintest clue EMA was releasing an album this year, but it just leaked. Pleasant surprise. Thought her last was severely underrated.

Yeah just gave it a whirl, I have to say I think she let her 90s pretensions get the best of her here as it's just a lot of digital squelches and glacial, portentous industrial slogs that sometime take the lead over actual songs, and I think her American Wasteland narrative can feel contrived and rather thin at times. Perhaps will lighten up on re-listens, but it's a bit lacking in killer moments, even The Future's Void made up for it's slightly muddled structure by having a stunning mid-section. I mean I think it's still a pretty solid record and has some interesting things going on, but her least-striking so far. Though I was stricken by "Recieve Love", probably the greatest song never to make it on You Are Free.

ANyways with Science Fiction dropping here's only hoping that mean's Sky, Chromatics and hell maybe even the Wrens will release an album sometime before new year's.

I have it downloaded, haven't given it a spin yet. Definitely should though, his release last year as Scallops has become one of my all time favourites. I think the lo-fi vibe works well with his spoken word style, and offsets how seriously he might come across as taking himself sometimes.

Balsams by Chuck Johnson

So I need to highly highly highly recommend this album. It's gorgeous, hypnotic music that's somewhere between ambient and post-rock (Pitchfork calls it "country post-rock"). Johnson uses his pedal steel to envelop you in lush soundscapes that sound very Harold Budd-like. It reminds me a lot of Daniel Lanois' album from last year (which was also fantastic). But yea, I can't recommend this highly enough, it's a really wonderful album.
