Well damn. RIP Mr. Hockey. The complete package - sorry I only saw him on TV when he was old and I was really young. Would've been cool to see him in his prime.

Anyone besides Necharsian (probably already starting drunken brawls with anyone who looks like Peter Chiarelli) have a response to the 23 minutes of madness in the NHL offseason yesterday?

It looks like Canada is trying to avoid ever making the playoffs again. Weber for Subban will look even for about a year but Weber is on the decline with a terrible contract. Still can't believe this is the thanks PK gets for all he's done in Montreal. The children's hospital will miss him most, though he promised his work there wouldn't be done.

As for the Taylor Hall trade, I've got nothing to say other than an awful move from Edmonton.

This new NHL season is a dandy. Still early, but loads of goals, and fast fast fast. McDavid & Matthews are bringing new excitement in. I'll do my usual picks for the season in a bit.

Teams that I can see winning the Cup: Pittsburgh, Washington, Tampa Bay, Florida, San Jose, Nashville, St. Louis.

I'd be very surprised if it went to the 'field'.

2017-18 Picks:

EAST

Atlantic

1. TB - Still loaded, & with a healthy Stamkos, they're dangerous.
2. Tor - Shan-a-plan is working! What a turnaround.
3. Mtl - Can't argue with Carey Price, but this team has thin depth.
4. Bos - Veteran line-up, McEvoy should be fun, but team as a whole is in decline.
5. Buf - Watch out. Eichel is amazing, but this team isn't there yet.
6. Ott - Injured Karlsson = big problem.
7. Fla - Intriguing, but lacks depth.
8. Det - What a mess this storied franchise has become.

Metropolitan

1. Pit - Still super-stacked.
2. Was - I don't see a huge drop-off... yet.
3. CBJ - So deep, but no real stars.
4. Car - Sleeper team. Great D.
5. Phi - Another sleeper team. Youth is emerging.
6. NYR - Overrated.
7. NYI - Too much off-ice distraction.
8. NJ - Turning the corner, but still crap.

Honestly, any team except Det or NJ could squeak into the playoffs. I love how wide-open the NHL is right now (unlike the NBA).

WEST

Central

1. Dal - Under-performed last year, and retooled nicely.
2. Wpg - That's right, 2nd. So much firepower.
3. Nas - Playoffs were no fluke.
4. Min - Still deep.
5. Chi - Starting to slip, but too much star-power to overlook.
6. STL - Wow. Rocked by injuries already.
7. Col - Sakic & Roy = great players, but terrible managers. Ruined a proud franchise.

Pacific

1. Ana - May have the best D in the NHL.
2. Edm - Pains me to say so, I still don't like their depth, but how can you argue with McJesus?
3. Cal - If Smith is OK in net, they'll be fine.
4. SJ - Sliding.
5. Arz - Improving. Finally.
6. LA - SLOW SLOW SLOW
7. LV - Actually a decent expansion team.
8. Van - I love seeing how bad they are. Suck it, Vancouver.

Not as wide open. I see the top 5 in each division as playoff hopefuls.

PLAYOFFS

TB over Was in East Final
Ana over Nas in West Final

TB over Ana. Pains me to say so, but...

Red Wings going back to Dead Wings era for a while :'( but if they can finish last for the next four years, hopefully they don't suck as much at drafting as they do at managing salaries.

I came here just to say don't sleep on the Canes, and am glad to find you aren't.

I'm not expecting Buffalo or Winnipeg to be as good as you predict, but neither are out of the realm of possibility. The only reasons I find the Blues might finish that low is the strength of their division and if Tarasenko or Pietrangelo gets injured, but otherwise those predictions look good.
