It's not like we didn't see this coming, but it's still really sad news anyway. Gord Downie, lead singer of the Tragically Hip; poet, activist, Canadian ambassador, and true artist died today at 53.
Is there a "must listen to" album of theres that I should take for a spin? I must confess, it's a band I never got around to, but, as I understand it, they were pretty influential up north.

Fully completely was my introduction to the Hip and I think it’s still the best point of entry to learn about their music.
Rest in Peace Gordon.

Fully Completely is their best album, Day for Night has their best song and is probably their second best album.

I know you've gotten like four different responses to this, but I think that the most essential Hip album is the compilation Yer Favourites. Normally I would never recommend a compilation, since I'm a strong believer in the album format, but Yer Favourites has more songs that I consider perfect than probably any album or compilation ever, and includes not only their hits but also most of their best deep cuts.
I have been listening to this band for many years.
They really put out a lot of great music. They never went big internationally, but they can play with the best of them.
The first time I seen the hip was about 10 years ago, and let me tell everyone, he's an incredible front man. He will get your attention with his unique personality and passion for his music. The band is really amazing with 3 guitars.
I was never disappointed after watching them.
Gord was magical. I will miss him and so will many.
For me, my favorite album is "Up to Here". Its their second.
