Out Hud. S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D. is a real gem of an album.

I don't know if I would call him unsuccessful, but I think that The Big Heat by Stan Ridgway is a great album that is often forgotten.

a have a demo/cassette tape from an 80s long island duo called Nicklas & McGloin that's pretty cool. it's acoustic/jazz/americana stuff. neither guy has had any commercial success, but the McGloin character, Kenny McGloin, went on to be a studio musician and has managed to make a career of it, playing slide guitar for the odd singer-songwriter here or there.
