This week I revamped and simplified my rating system. It now has only two categories, time-weighted track average and top 40 minutes track average (I eliminated the unweighted track average). So the prior scores in this diary have changed, but I'm not going to go back and edit them all. You can see the latest scores on my overall chart or on my RYM list.

I'm going to try a new project, which is partly something I was working on already, and partly something inspired by Mercury's diary. I'm going through the RYM top chart in order (non-metal albums, because I don't think I'm ready to push my boundaries that much this year - maybe in 2019 or 2020) and scoring everything that I haven't scored yet. Scoring requires at least two listens and at least one close listen. It's how I'm rebuilding my BEA charts. The RYM top chart changes constantly, so I have a list that's frozen in time at the beginning of this year to remedy that issue. In the process of this project I'll end up listening to a lot of albums that I haven't liked small samples of (basically everything on the list that I haven't heard all the way through yet), and expand my taste as I go. I'll also revisit a lot of albums that I already like and come to a better understanding of them. I definitely won't be writing as much as Mercury, but maybe I can manage to say a few words here and there.

Here are the first ten:

1. OK Computer by Radiohead

For years I've avoided this album and this band, as the iTunes samples I tried didn't grab me. I know, sacrilege. After enjoying In Rainbows, I finally listened to OK Computer in full for the first time last week, and didn't like it all that much. I gave it a 2.5/5, and it came off as a rather dull album. This will be my first album to revisit, and like I do each time I score something, I'm going to read the lyrics as I listen. Maybe it'll grow on me a bit to a 3/5, the minimum score to stay in my iTunes library.

2. The Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd

I used to have this album in my library, just because of its renown as a classic. I found it pretty boring, never listened to it all the way through, and ultimately deleted it. I'm looking forward to seeing if my tastes have expanded enough in the meantime to make it a fulfilling experience.

3. The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground

I love this album. I've loved it for years. It's already been scored, so I won't be revisiting it. I gave it a 4.32.

4. Kid A by Radiohead

This is another album that I listened to for the first time last week. I saw something in it that I didn't see in OK Computer, and enjoyed it, especially the electronic elements. It got a 3/5 on the first listen, but maybe there's room to grow for this one as well.

5. Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd

Similar to The Dark Side Of The Moon: this was in my library for a while out of a sense of obligation, I never heard it all the way through, and I deleted it. The one song I remember liking is the title track. I really don't know what to expect out of revisiting this one.

6. In The Court Of The Crimson King by King Crimson

This is the first album on the list that I have next to no experience with, other than the sample on Kanye's "Power" (one of the greatest songs ever). It's not on Apple Music, so I may have to wait to order this through the library or find an illicit download to give this the attention it deserves.

7. Loveless by My Bloody Valentine

Another album that I really love, and one that's grown on me with each listen. Right now it's at a 4.38, and I won't be revisiting it for this project.

8. Abbey Road by The Beatles

My favorite Beatles album, and a really good all-around listen. I gave it a 4.28, and I won't be revisiting it at this time.

9. Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys

The best album ever made, hands down. I've loved this from first listen. It has the highest score I've ever awarded, at 4.93. Won't be revisiting it.

10. Revolver by The Beatles

A very good album, albeit a little overrated. I gave it a 4.06 and won't be going back to it for the project.

OK Computer by Radiohead

Overall Rating: 3.14

I've revised my prior views on this album. It's definitely not dull. Dreary, yes. But there are a lot of interesting compositional ideas going on here. It's an inventive and engaging soundscape, and performed with a great deal of skill as well. My stumbling block remains that while I can appreciate these instrumentals, I often don't particularly like them. Most of the ideas, while well-designed and executed, don't do much to create pleasure in my brain.

Lyrically, it's also pretty well-executed, but the tone of much of it is repellent to me. Thom Yorke's lyrics are saturated in a particular brand of cynicism, a narcissistic variety in which he positions himself as a superior intellect, in juxtaposition to common people, whom he depicts as more or less sheep. The lyrics are at times misanthropic, at other times suicidal, always full of malaise. The detached and disdainful air that resurfaces throughout makes the narrator hard to relate to or empathize with.

This album did grow on me with another close listen, and will stay in my library, but it hasn't struck me as a work of genius, and doesn't seem like something I'll return to often.

Track pick: Subterranean Homesick Alien
Next up: The Dark Side Of The Moon
