Artists and albums that did not get their respect until some reissue or compilation years after they made recordings. I've became a bit obsessed with these sorts of projects, because they usually end up being quite good.
Something of a recent obsession of mine - recorded on reel-to-reel in the early 70s, shared around family members until J Mascis got hold of some of the tracks and ended up releasing them 30+ years after they were recorded. Acoustic chanteuse in the same vein as Vashti and Nick Drake. Well worth a listen (and thanks to LittleM for the initial heads-up).
I'm not sure if Karen Dalton had much success in her lifetime, but her 1969 and 1971 albums were reissued in 2006. A folk singer with a ragged voice along the lines of Billie Holiday, and a tragic life story.
Yeah, we could all go on listing artists who made little impact when their albums were first released, but I don’t think most of these albums rkm lists were ever ‘lost*’. Rodriguez, for example, outsold Elvis in South Africa. If you apply the same logic then Nick Drake should be listed here, which of course would be somewhat missing the point of the OP.
