Creep and The Air That I Breathe share some chord progressions but the melodies are very different. Lana Del Rey literally took the main vocal melody from Creep. _________________ All time

well, radiohead literally lifted the chords, the bass line and the drum line from the air that i breathe, BUT radiohead were nobodies mocking something cheesy and popular (how very 90s of them). when the hollies came hollering, thom thom and the radio-heads admitted they lifted the song and shared writing credits with the hollies. i think in a sense that they must of been terribly proud of themselves - sharing writing credits with something they were making fun of. lana del rey is an established artist, who as i understand it has denied radiohead writing credits, despite reaching out to them first. it's not quite a fair comparison....
not that it all matters though. i think the whole idea of copyrighting harmonies, melodies, rhythms, etc. has gotten blown way out of proportion. so what if she lifted the melody? so what if they lifted a chord progression? they did something different and interesting with it. until recently, this was expected in music - you take a well-known theme and you muck with it. happens all the time in the blues, jazz and folk music. why shouldn't it be allowed in pop/rock/et al?
when it becomes wrong is when i cover Little Richards' Tutti Frutti and claim it as my own. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.
