I still think this album was recorded in the future, then brought back to 1978. Absolutely essential.

Also, does anybody else think this song sounds like Wilco?

Wilco? Maybe.

I’ve always thought that this sounded like the foundation for Parquet Courts’ last album, Human Performace. I mean just listen to “Outdoor Miner” & the title track of that album back-to-back and you’ll see.

As for the album itself; it’s my favourite record of 1978. It’s maybe even more perfect than its predecessor. One thing is for sure though, not one of their contemporaries was able to completely reinvent themselves in the way Wire did. It’s especially astonishing that it happened in the space of a single album. From punk to post-punk seamlessly.

I adore that cover as well. It stands with so many of my personal favourites.

I really like the first three albums, but my favorite is It's Beginning To and Back Again. It's almost a completely different style, and I don't think many people like it very much, sounds a little bit 80s probably. But it's got four or five songs that are really excellent and I'd rather hear those for some reason.

If there's ever a band that could define the term 'more than the sum of their parts' it's this lot. I feel like none of their songs are all that great and yet as a piece their albums remain remarkable and arresting.
