THESE WERE THE TOP VOTE-GETTERS

Gimme Shelter.... 18
Sympathy for the Devil... 11
She's a Rainbow... 11
Paint It Black... 10
Wild Horses... 8
Street Fighting Man... 8
You Can't Always Get What You Want... 7
Jumpin Jack Flash... 6
Tumbling Dice... 6
Brown Sugar... 5
2000 Light Years From Home... 5
Ruby Tuesday...5
Honky Tonk Women...4
Satisfaction... 4
Miss You...4

And nothing else got more than 3..

And I was pleased that 8 of my picks turned out to be in the overall top 10. Not really surprised but pleased.

Actually there is one thing that surprised me. Not surprised, more like shocked: Happy didn't get any votes besides mine. And considering that Exile on Main Street is their highest rated album, none of its songs got very many votes. Tumbling Dice is the only song that got more than one vote. I think that's weird.

Happy was one of a few songs that I struggled to find a place for and just couldn't get it there.

And that's kind of the amazing thing about Exile. It's got lots of songs at that level. So while it may not have a Gimme Shelter, it is chock full of next tier songs, so as an overall album, it can still score quite high.

Wow. That's a lot of high scores. Either we rate differently or you're a Stones superfan. Don't think I even have that many Nick Cave songs that highly rated and I worship him. Still most of those 100s are hella classic and there's quite a few great songs that didn't even show up on your list. The Stones may be a bit overrated in the grand scheme of things but they're definitely underrated here on the forums (I'd say their BEA chart rankings more accurately reflects their greatness than just about anywhere else). That run from Banquet to Exile is just about as good a streak of albums as you'll get from any mainstream rock band and to this day they're still a great live act.

Hi Seth, it looks like a long list but I think you mentioned some tracks two times (Brown Sugar, Get Off My Cloud and many others), three times (Gimme Shelter) and Sympathy For the Devil even four times Wink
But still a very good list and most of these tracks are indeed very good.

RE: Overrated and underrated
Yeah - I'd agree the songs are probably overrated. If it makes my heart sing, I have no problem giving it a 100. And the 85 is basically anything that is considered "good", but not mediocre, but definitely not great. What's in between those is probably your guess is as good as mine. haha.

As far as their albums being underrated, I agree and I disagree. I'm clearly a stones fan, but I also don't think they made too many great/perfect albums. I agree with your stretch from about 68 to 72 or whatever... amazing output, but a good chunk of those albums have some songs on them that fall flat... idk. This is my opinion of course. And some people don't care about a single bad song or two - if the rest of it is top notch, well then it's great. Somehow my brain doesn't allow for a couple bad songs to be considered great. Anyway... that's my theory, is if this were a song site, they'd rank way higher than they do as album makers.

RE: Bases Covered
Basically I went through a good chunk (if not all their albums?) a few years ago and rated them in the moment I listened to them. Then I just exported the csv from my ratings, sorted it and shared it here.

RE: Multiple songs

Yeah, I noticed that after I posted and then didn't care... haha - what it is is that those songs show up on best of records or live records, and so there's the duplicates. If there's a difference in the scores, then that's likely I was in a different mood at the time or it's a live version and not as good, or vice versa, the live version is better.

Actually, I think that Black And Blue sitting on BEA as the 18th best Stones album (behind even a pair of compilations and a live album) is about right. Even a bit generous. The album is the sound of a band floundering: Mick Taylor had just left, and it's basically a vinyl audition for a new guitar player, between Ron Wood (3 tracks), Wayne Perkins (3 tracks), and Harvey Mandel (2 tracks). "Memory Motel" is not bad, and "Fool To Cry" is pretty good...but "Hot Stuff" is inferior to the disco of "Miss You", and two attempts at reggae and the sheer blandness of the rest (not to mention failing to give songwriting credits on two songs, one each to Wood and Billy Preston) makes this the first real indication that the Stones were running on empty. This album ranks below even the exceptionally bland Emotional Rescue for a reason.

Some Girls is infinitely better...and THAT'S the last gasp of the great Stones. Wood becomes a full member, and they sound inspired and solid...not meandering and bland like on Black And Blue.

Yes...Some Girls is the beginning of the "new" Stones sound. But it's also the one place where they got it exactly right. And the songs are far and away better than Black And Blue. It has better energy, better songs, better playing, better everything.

I like Memory Motel, Hand of Fate, Fool to Cry , and Crazy Mama. The rest suck. What I meant is, to me, they were the last songs they did that sounded like the old Rolling Stones to me. I like it better than It's Only Rock and Roll though.

I thought of a few that I do like after 1976. Little T&A, Hang Fire and Undercover of the Night. I don't know why I like that one, but I do.

Very well put.
