Can't believe so few people have charted some of my favorites from the year...

Dungeness by Trembling Bells

Fairport Convention meets Jefferson Airplane heavy folk murder ballads.

In Transit by The Amazing

Swedish Dungen side project goes Slowdive meets Red House Painters

Onion by Shannon And The Clams

Super fun fuzzed out retro 60s garage rock

The Straight Hits! by Josh T. Pearson

Ex-Lift to Experience frontman finds balance between big his post-rock band and depressing folk solo project.

YRU Still Here? by Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog

Masterful avant-jazz trio plays inspired political post-punk

I’m completely with you on the last two and will definitely check out the others. There’s one I completely don’t get either. There are so many Grant Lee Buffalo fans around and nobody seems to care about the solo Grant Lee Philips one:

Widdershins by Grant Lee Phillips
Great Americana and even better than the band

I checked out the three albums I hadn't heard yet Mecca and while the Trembling Bells (maybe a bit too eccentric) and Shannon & The Clams (maybe a bit too derivative: Backstreets doesn't even hide to take its source in Runaway by yes Del Shannon) didn' completely convince me, I was completely mesmerised by In Transit by The Amazing. To me this is the inventive brother of Mark Kozelek. The first track is very shoegaze and I immediately liked it and also the next two tracks were very good but nothing prepared me for Benson Se...: the first part in itself was enough to make this the best track on the album but then that guitar storm erupted: wow. The other standout tracks were the last two and especially Asleep has a fantastic guitar sound which reminds me a bit of the Cure but is still very original. I should check out their other albums as well.
I liked the review of this album on your site and was checking out the rest of the site as well and I discovered that you staged in 2011 the great Belgian band nearly nobody in Belgium has even heard of: Madensuyu. They have issued an album in 2018 that I also really can recommend:

Current by Madensuyu

While their music is normally very guitar based, this album doesn't feature any guitars, only piano but they make that piano rock like any guitar album would: just great.

I can safely say I'll be listening to all of these in the near future

I had no idea that Madensuyu had released anything new. And with you saying it's a piano album has me even more intrigued.

I was really lucky to get them to play a small show in NYC years ago. They were touring with Wire and wanted a small small on the side. I added them to a long night of bands on a weeknight. By the time they went on, the room was relatively empty, but they were incredibly. I can't imagine anyone forgetting that performance. 2 seated guys rocking harder than just about any band I've ever seen.

The Long Sleep by Jenny Hval

Just making sure people don't miss this. Streaming on Spotify. 21-minute-ish EP/album thing, but it's great.

Also, new Pusha T is pretty solid.

Oh, and this is great:

Downtown Castles Can Never Block The Su... LaMar Gay

Don't sleep.

It's so good, listened to it every day since release. Haven't heard a punchier, more focused hip hop album in such a long time. I still adore Kanye whenever he's behind a mixing desk and not a microphone, he brings so much to the table here. Can't fault Pusha either, he goes hard. Pretty hilarious he's actually got Drake on damage control lol.

Only complaint would be that I have to endure Rick Ross for some of those precious 21 minutes.

Listening now, just under 24 minutes on my playlist, so actually slightly longer than Daytona if that's saying much.

First song is as bad as the album art so far. Will edit in my thoughts later.

edit: yeah idk I like that he's obviously being a lot more laid back and just having fun and expressing himself with these last two albums but with the amount of fanfare that always surrounds them it's just exhausting. First impressions is that this is easily his worst effort but then it does just sound like him trying a few things out in the studio - which can't be a bad thing. There's probably a million things to say regarding the hype and the statements he made on twitter resulting in this album, but I'll just say that I hope whoever came to his listening party didn't drive too far.

I don't think we've seen the end of whatever train this is, he's got something else up his sleeve.
