Oh the memories! I was only into the Cure for 2 years when this album came out. I was at sixth form College (I was 16). Robert Smith was on British Breakfast TV with the High video. It was totally bizarre seeing a Cure video at 8.15 in the morning over your cornflakes.
I love the tracks Open, Trust and Apart best. and of course it produced their most radio-friendly hit and probably their biggest selling single - Friday I'm In Love. Like the Lovecats before it that song changed everything for them. I bet it helped sell a fair few Cure Greatest Hits albums to non-traditional fans too. It had a great video too. Good old Tim Pope.
At the time they were temporarily taking influence from the ones they had influenced in the first place: shoegazing. They (also temporarily) removed the "the" to their name for this reason.
I love this album. My favorite track is "To Wish Impossible Things" with its oriental violin and Pornography-era drums. Superb.
I enjoy Wish. It sounds reminiscent of both Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and Disintegration without reaching the heights of either. Nevertheless, it's a solid album. I'd rank it 4th or 5th among Cure albums. Tracks 4, 7, and 10 stand out for me. _________________ on such a winter's day
