Groovin' High by Dizzy Gillespie

I knew about half these tracks from other compilations, and this is a good collection of bebop to be sure. However, some of the songs seem out of place, and it hasn't quite clicked for me yet. 3.5/5

Ramblin' Man by Hank Williams

This was a good slice of Hank Williams' material, with a bunch of tunes I knew and liked, and a few new ones. Not all of them hit the mark, however, especially when the lyrics take a turn for self-pity. 3.5/5

In The Wee Small Hours by Frank Sinatra

The best thing about this album is the cover art. I can appreciate his talent, but the song selection and instrumentation could be better. 3/5

Brown And Roach Incorporated by Cliffor... Max Roach

Unfortunately, this was a significant step down from their other effort this year. Only toward the end did the group start picking up the pace and really letting loose. 3.5/5

Sarah Vaughan In Hi-Fi by Sarah Vaughan

Expressive and intimate jazz vocals. I liked this one better than the more acclaimed self-titled. 4/5

Jazz At Massey Hall by The Quintet

Phenomenal playing and chemistry brings these classics to life in a way the studio recordings hadn't. 4/5

Moondog by Moondog

A very interesting, very unique, very imperfect album. A must-listen even if it's not my favorite. 3.5/5

Ellington At Newport by Duke Ellington

Was not expecting to enjoy a Duke Ellington record so much. The band really cooks, especially Paul Gonsalves on tenor sax. Great crowd energy too. I listened to the original release, which is partly counterfeit "live" but supposedly a better listening experience. 4/5

Pithecanthropus Erectus by Charles Mingus

This album was very technically proficient but didn't do a lot for me on a gut level. 3.5/5

Gospel Train by Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Wow - stellar album from the godmother of rock & roll. Christian music normally isn't something I gravitate toward, but the passion and fervor in this one is magnetic. First gospel record I've heard front to back. 4/5

1. Ellington At Newport - Duke Ellington 4/5
2. Lady Sings The Blues - Billie Holiday 4/5
3. Jazz At Massey Hall - The Quintet 4/5

6. Moondog - Moondog 3.5/5
7. Calypso - Harry Belafonte 3.5/5
8. Pithecanthropus Erectus - Charles Mingus 3.5/5
9. Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley 3.5/5

I liked it! I think it's the type of album that could grow on me with more listens and reading a translation of the lyrics. Thanks for the rec - I've added it to my list of albums to check out from this year Smile

If you liked this one can I just recommend another weird album of the lowlands from this year, now from Belgium, and it can best be described as piano punk. I recommended it to Meccalecca and he liked it as well:

Current by Madensuyu

You don't have to mind about the lyrics because most of the tracks are instrumentals.
