Do you think it's cheating to put Best-ofs or compilations in your top 100? I used to think so and at first I didn't have any in my top 100. And then I had one, then I had two or three, and now I'm up to 9. But since most people put their favorite albums, and not necessarily the best albums, I figured it makes sense to put Best ofs if they really are my favorite albums. I mean, if the reason we make charts in the first place is to show everyone what our favorite albums are, then NOT putting Best ofs would just be stupid. Some people say it's cheating because of course a compilation is more likely to have more good songs on it than a regular album. Not necessarily though. Some of my favorite artists have best-ofs that aren't really all that great because sometimes their best tracks weren't necessarily hits or weren't necessarily popular.

So do you think compilations should be put in top 100s??
Do you have any in yours? If so, which ones?

Edit: since I asked which ones you have, I might as well show which ones I have.

I mean it almost becomes essential to have at least a few if you're really into particularly singles oriented genres (pop, a lot of dance music, etc) and/or music that primarily flourished before the LP era

You got a lot of sensible ones there. As much as I like dance music, you'd think I'd have more compilations of that kind of music. But actually most of the compilations I have are by big-name rock bands. Maybe because I find their best-ofs so spectacular that they deserve to be there. I only have one Disco and one other dance music compilation. I used to have the same Chic that you do in my top 100, but somehow it disappeared

it's a release, it's fair game. I find they're usually too long for me though, or like I still don't like it in album form. like theres artists who I think are great and have amazing songs but even if I like all of them I still don't want to listen to a whole hour of them.

Cheating is a rather strong word. I choose not to put best of’s or compilations in but that’s my choice. Don’t hold it against you if you choose to. Only exception would be s chart dominated by best of’s. That would not be right.

I’m having extreme déjà vu with this thread topic.

But anyway, my current rule is that the only comps allowed are V/A or those that consist primarily of material not available on an artist’s LPs.

I personally don’t have any in my top 100. I do for some years but overall I do not though I honestly considered decade by Neil young and Tupac’s greatest hits and honestly wouldn’t be shocked if I chose to put one of those in my chart someday.

Decade by Neil Young

Greatest Hits by 2Pac
