great experimental mathy-rock stuff that got me turned onto tyondai braxton and later anthony braxton. tyondai still the only one i'm aware of to put his vox through the digitech whammy.

Only ever heard Central Market; anything else you suggest? I know he was doing stuff long before Battles even

That's true.

I suppose I meant the traditional "singer/songwriter" singing.

But, yeah, these vocals are cool.

I had NO idea these were actual lyrics and thought it was just nonsense/babbling with no meaning (keep in mind I pay attention to about 20% of lyrics in a traditional song) so I looked them up:

People won't be people
When they hear this sound
That's been glowing in the dark at the edge of town
People won't be people
No, the people won't be people when they hear this sound
Won't you show me what begins at the edge of town
People won't be people
When they hear this sound
That's been glowing in the dark at the edge of town
People won't be people
No, the people won't be people when they hear this sound
Won't you show me what begins at the edge of town
Singer is a crook, whoa, ey, oh
Singer is a crook, whoa, ey, oh
Singer is a crook, whoa, ey, oh
Singer is a crook, whoa, ey, oh
Kitchen is the cook, whoa, ey, oh
Scissors are the barbers, whoa, ey, oh
Singer is a crook, whoa, ey, oh
The chorus full of actors
People won't be people
When they hear this sound
That's been glowing in the dark at the edge of town
People won't be people
No, the people won't be people when they hear this sound
Won't you show me what begins at the edge of town

i love central market, but the instrumentation can be a bit off-putting for people (despite fantastic arrangements). hive1, on the other hand, is a lot easier to digest, though kind of ethereal in that it's hard to grab anything, so sort of an opposite end of the spectrum. tyondai is a big fan of the non-sequitur, which can make his solo work frustrating at times. it's all mad scientist, y'know? maybe his best work is the oranged out ep. it's the usual abstract, leftfield mad scientist you're accustomed to from him, but it's kind of accessible. it's more engaging than hive1, and the melodies are more in line with central market without having the offensive blaring that central market can overwhelm you with.

if you dig back into his earlier work (pre-battles), he did a lot of ambient / droney stuff that's interesting. it used to be free through bandcamp, but i've no clue if that page is still up anymore.
