Revisiting Shostakovich's 15th Symphony -- truly one of the most profound symphonies ever composed...

Ive been revisiting Jarvi/Gotenburg and Sanderling's renditions to determine if theyre infact superior to the Haitink one I list. Those two have been neck and neck with it for some time...

Here is some brief but intriguing insight (particularly to those uninitiated) into this supreme masterpiece:

Hi Afterhours,
I really like this list! I have a recommendation: Nikolai Medtner's Piano Sonata #7 in E minor 'Night Wind' (1911). It's a dazzling, staggering beast of a piece (definitely my favourite piano sonata) and it would be interesting to see how you would rank it in comparison to the achievements of Beethoven, Schubert and Liszt in the same genre.

Tecommended performance: Andrey Ponochevny. It's on YouTube under the following title:

Thank you, I have listened to it before but I don't have a rating for it, and probably not until I revisit it once or twice! Thank you for the recommendation and the reminder. Staggering beast of a piece for sure Smile

I agree Laughing

And this is more or less scratching the surface with the most immediate/obvious inclusions! So much more to add!

Note that I forgot to mention Dvorak's 9th which probably should probably be included at/near the very top of a selection of (meaningful/emotional) highly melodic masterpieces. Beethoven's 9th is another one. Etc.

(in Rock, obviously NMH's Aeroplane could be included too among others -- though I didn't mention it because its not as melodically or harmonically creative as Mozart, etc)

If you're using a spreadsheet to calculate these scores, you might want to check a formula or something, because this number is wrong.
