End To End by Barre Phillips

Barre Phillips recorded the first solo bass record (Journal Violone), repeatedly established his signature approach across several other solo recordings (and bass duos, not to mention his many excellent ensembles), and claims this is his final bass solo. He utilizes a lot of extended technique but prioritizes emotiveness. Highly recommended. Available to stream on spotify.

Quoniam Facta Sum Vilis by Brandon Lopez

Another solo bass record that establishes a rising star as a unique voice to watch. His style is an ominous, darkly romantic caricature that uses a lot of extended technique (himself, and the environment). Highly recommended. Available to try out in full for free on bandcamp.

Syllogistic Moments by Peter Evans/Barry Guy

If you've ever wondered what the sonic boundaries of the trumpet and bass are, this is a great place to start. Also showcases complimentary, rapid-fire communication. Available to try out in full for free on bandcamp

While I've been losing my mind listening to non-stop "Ambient" type releases over the last week, I found a pretty decent one from this year.

Tha Carter V by Lil Wayne

The album as a whole suffers from excessive length, but I am currently obsessed with the absolute banger Mona Lisa on here featuring Kendrick. Definitely one of my favorite tracks this year.

Great track, definitely a banger.. I agree though, I would've preferred 12-15 songs of Mona Lisa's quality, but typical Wayne albums are in excess of 20 songs so thats expected

The album as a whole is better than anybody had any right to reasonably expect, but it suffers a little from recent Eminem fever, whereby the beats are too often soulless and melodramatic, and the rapping to tryhard and shouty (though nowhere near as bad as Em, obviously). As you say, it's also seven or eight tracks too long. But it is good, and it's lovely to hear Wayne operating, at times, at a level not massively below his peak. A pleasant and refreshing surprise, but far from one of the year's best hip-hop records.

Some new picks:

Black Ego by Lando Chill

I really like this guy. His 2017 release was crazy underappreciated. Probably one of the best upcoming rappers I can think of. Great stuff.

Beheaded Totem by HHY & The Macumbas

Rhythmic electronic... avant-prog trance? Hypnotic. Worth a spin. Not really like anything I've heard before.

Somewhere along the lines of Gil-Scott Heron and Willis Early Beal. Atmospheric soul with a lot of intelligent things to say about the state of the world.

And this has been in my queue since the moment it came out... looking forward to giving it a listen.
