I’d agree with that. With that in mind, I’d suggest a good test of “artists with the largest number of perfect songs” would be to see how many times those songs have been covered by other artists. A perfect song will be almost indestructible, and will transcend things like genre and generation. |
According to that metric "Yesterday" by The Beatles would be the best song of all time. Does that ring true for you? |
I suppose it is one metric, and Yesterday is a fine song in it's own right. The greatest song ever, eh, I'm not entirely sure anything can claim that - at any moment/mood change/energy level/paradigm shift, that definition could change, but at one time, I really did think Yesterday was a fantastic song in meaning and composition - emotionally and mentally. Not so much now, but that probably means more I changed and moved past a sublime moment with that song. Sometimes we crave new meaning once we are no longer "satisfied". Sometimes.

Well thank you for raising a question I will spend the rest of my life trying to find the answer to. Anyway, I don't have a set list, but i have a couple in my mind.
For instance, I think Good Vibrations is the single greatest song ever recorded. Period. I think that we can all agree on that at the very least.
Other than that, I can only speak in generalities. I think the artists with the most perfect songs are as follows:
The Beatles (obviously)
Rush
Pink Floyd
Miles Davis
Zeppelin
Big Star
Queen
Brian Eno
Kind of a rock heavy list, but welcome to my brain. _________________ Don't get work up over my posts. I'm an idiot.

I don't have a number, but I'd say Radiohead and Kendrick Lamar.
Radiohead - All of OK Computer and In Rainbows, most of Kid A, three songs on The Bends, four on Amnesiac, two on HTTT
Kendrick: Hiiipower, Most of GKMC, all of TPAB, probably two on untitled, unmastered, four-five on DAMN

Whoa those are really high numbers. Interesting how some of us see so much perfection in music and others see hardly any.
I would agree that 1, 3, 4, 6, and 8 made one or more perfect songs, but I don't know about the rest of the list. Yeah it might be edgy of me to say that 5 & 12 combine for zero perfect songs, but not as edgy as saying 9 & 10 combine for 89, right? _________________ Add me on RYM

For me, it wasn't perfection (mostly because I think that's a bogus reality), rather I find them hitting all the points of a great "pop" song (especially when talking rap/pop/rock) like most of these lists are addressing - solid musical performances which tantalize the mind and move the heart and properly reflect humanity. For me there are likely thousands of songs that do that in fantastic ways if we gave them the chance.
Or maybe I'm a pleb. One or the other I'm sure of it.

Sorry but I don't really understand what you're trying to say here???
Am I edgy? Are they bad artists? Is it wrong to say the two have made a collection of perfect tunes?
I'm not offended, I just don't get your comment...

I have no idea how edgy of a person you are, but thinking those two artists have 89 perfect songs is an edgy opinion.
Looking at the formal definitions of edgy now, I see the common internet usage of the word is not listed, so perhaps that is a source of confusion. I meant a spicy/provocative/unpopular opinion, often vocalized for the purpose of bait.
(I do think it's a wrong opinion and they're bad musicians, but that's not what I was saying.) _________________ Add me on RYM

That just goes to show my carefreeness of not fitting in with the "popular opinions" . And yes, many people have attacked me over the years just by liking these two particular artists . Hopsin and XXXTentacion are two of my favorite rappers, that has helped me through a lot, but also opened my eyes, and made spectacular music that still stands tall .
My opinion can be as wrong as possible, I'm still gonna stick with it, 'cause it is mine after all. But I don't really see it as edgy though.
