Journey In Satchidananda by Alice Coltrane
I first heard this on some interwebcast about spiritual jazz that was intriguing and super glad I revisited it (I may have during the Jazz olympic thread as well?) - this time I felt I was able to give it a better shake. Impressive jazz harp/piano work - but a tanpura... that was quite interesting to have in jazz. I remember hearing some people talking about how the improv of Indian music and jazz have nothing in common, but still interesting to bring it together.

I got lost on these videos too because I was interested in finding out if you can change keys on these or if you have to have a tanpura for each key... never found out but cool to hear them talk about their modes vs Guido's.

Easily 85.

2. baystateoftheart - there was a time when I thought this ridiculous and now somehow became really good for me. The lyrics stopped being cliche and the music amazing. Maybe this could blossom for you too.

? Not following?

Lol never mind. 1993's Lodi Dodi is a cover of 1985's La Di Da Di by Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick, and 1997's Hypnotize also samples it. My mistake d'oh!

Oh ok, gotcha.

The original 'La Di Da Di' may be my single favourite rap vocal performance.

Rage Against The Machine by Rage Against The Machine

Ugh, this was a serious chore to get through. Mediocre metal instrumentals + bad rapping = a bad album. He doesn't have a good flow or voice, and lyrically it's a mess. On the better songs, it's as if they copied Public Enemy lyrics, adapted them for a white audience, and dumbed them down. Overall, it sounds like the music an angsty/angry white teenage boy would make, so it's not surprising that that describes many of their biggest fans. One of the worst albums I've heard from this thread. 2/5.

The Mexican-American and the African-American who made this music would not be happy to hear that.

I've got some more I could say, but I'll just leave it at that; however, I will give you this as a consolation.

RATM appears at about 3:20 in the video.

Suede by Suede

This is better than "Dog Man Star" I don't know why that is rated higher. One of the better Britpop albums I've heard. Better than Oasis, probably about the same as, I don't know, Primal Scream, maybe?

BAYSTATE, try to listen to King Crimson, the first track of that album is actually available on youtube, but I don't know about the rest. If you can't do it, then listen to Daydream Nation again, I guess.

August and Everything After- Counting Crows
Metropolis Pt. 2- Dream theater
Sam's Town- The Killers
Use Your Illusion II- Guns N Roses
Ray of Light- Madonna
Hopes and Fears- Keane
Modern Life Is Rubbish- Blur
All That You Can't Leave Behind- U2
The Wild Hunt- The Tallest Man On Earth
O- Damien Rice

It's very fair to say that was a stupid comment on my part. I honestly didn't think I had left the word white in that sentence of the final version of my post... oops! Embarassed d'oh!

No biggie, I can understand that, because of the genre, and people like Fred Durst being associated with it, that would be an easy conclusion to draw.

And as I had said, that was my first take on it too... and then I actually listened to the lyrics and actually paid attention to the bass, and then the guitar is incredibly unique... zero angsty teenagers wrote this, rather an educated group of fine musicians (even if I once stood where you stood).

I'm glad you find enjoyment in this record. I did actually listen to the lyrics this time, even if I didn't absorb every single one. Granular attention to bass and guitar technique doesn't do that much for me as a non-musician. I'm not knocking the instrumental talent or the education of those involved, but simply how they chose to use it. And yes I know it was not made by angsty teenagers, although in some respects (not including technical instrumental ability) it does sound to me as if it were.

Yeah - totally fair, as I also agreed with your standpoint when they first came out (RE: the limp bizkuansdpgun comment... I can't even remember how their stupid name is spelled). More a talking point than anything.
