These songs are on polar opposites of the spectrum. Like both a lot. That Harlem Gospel Traveler track is fantastic retro soul. And Sophie sounds like the future of freaked out pop. Another tough one.
Love that Harlem Gospel Travelers track...great stuff. I managed to get to 41 seconds of the SOPHIE track but by then it was quite clear where my vote was going so played ‘he’s on time’ again instead.
After listening to both tracks in this bracket that I'm somewhat curious of, I decided to listen to both tracks.
With He's On Time, I definitely think think this is a great track. There is a lot of passion within the vocals And the sound is immediate. However, there are some issues. For one, the most interesting part of the track becomes the double edge sword. And I am referring to the drumming. I will agree that the drumming brings the energy and is quite different compared to other soul tracks. But I'm somewhat flabbergasted by how lo-fi it is. Like I feel like other soul tracks in this vein would be more crisp. And as I listen to this track, I wished there was more bells and whistles to keep me distracted from the drumming.
So Ponyboy actually wins by default. Now, I do need to explain why I love this track. For one, even though it is noisy and atonal and doesn't give a fuck whether you would enjoy it or not, this track is quite controlled. It mastered the act of balancing on a tightrope. For another I like how it creates a weird and alien world that would be scary to exist in but is a fascinating one to view. And lastly, while I could go on for a few more sentences on why I enjoy this, my favorite part is close to two minutes in are these surreal panting noises that sounds like a warped concoction of the record scratches in Herbie Hancock's Rockit as well as the pants in George Clinton's Atomic Dog.
Maybe there will be further discussion for these songs, but for me it's Ponyboy.
I'm going to be damned if my vote is the first for the latter rather for the former.
Edit:No. Mine was the fourth for the latter. That's not that bad actually.
