I've been a movie watching machine for the past week or two. In between tax money and my neighbor buying new movies every week I've pumped up my numbers as of late. Lots of 3.5s and 4s. Should have a pretty decent list soon but I'll probably wait until just before the deadline.

80-85 ish. Might climb to 90. I think over the past 7-8 years my number is usually around 100-120. It was a slightly light year, which happened in the music world as well. I think the industry's understanding how overwhelming the age of information can be... numbers kinda peaked around 2013-2015, and it's been slowing since in both fields. Makes things a little easier to digest.

Also, Hayden, I updated my list in my original post

And will update Smile

Thanks for all the list so far everyone. We've got 171 individual films submitted so far, and quite the race within the top 10. Some surprises too.

A few thoughts on movies I watched for the poll:

Liked First Reformed a lot, but the influence and referencing of other movies rises to almost De Palma-like levels. At times it practically feels like a remake of Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest (just the latter film's title reveals one connection to First Reformed). One exchange is a homage to the famous scene in Ingmar Bergman's Winter Light where the priest denigrates his ex-lover Marta -- Esther in First Reformed even resembles Marta. There's also a slight similarity to Taxi Driver -- an isolated man coming close to committing a terroristic attack (of course Schrader wrote Taxi Driver). Taxi Driver was influenced by Bresson's Pickpocket, so Schrader has a record of Bresson influence. There's also a vague resemblance to Mamet's Homicide -- an authority figure who gradually evolves into an at least potential domestic terrorist (they both also have a spare flavor due to the low budgets), though that similarity is probably an accident.

I really enjoyed Annihilation, perhaps more than I should have. It's obviously very influenced by Stalker -- Annihilation is based on a novel, so perhaps it's the novel that's influenced by Stalker. Oddly, there are also similarities to The Ruins (I'm going by the novel; haven't seen the movie). One very direct swipe is the mutant bear parroting the voice of one of the dead characters; in the novel, the (alien?) vines also parrot the voices of dead characters (doubt this detail made it into the movie version). The ending nods to 2001, but then many sci-fi movies do.

Lynne Ramsey should've at very least gotten a Best Director nom for You Were Never Really Here. A huge leap in her development from Let's Talk About Kevin. YWNRH's based on a novella by Jonathan Ames, the guy who created the TV series Bored to Death!

Thanks for the list mdbaxter Smile

And looking forward to yours PurpleHazel. Def a You Were Never Really Here/Taxi Driver/ First Reformed connection in your post, but I'm too lazy to flesh it out.
