Thank you, I am familiar with his work. No 7s that I am aware of, but his early-to-mid 60s stuff is pretty badass for the time!

Apparently, Mark Hollis has passed away at 64. Legendary vocalist and leader of Talk Talk, whose masterpieces Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock were hugely influential towards Post Rock (and slowcore) and whose career basically laid key elements of the groundwork for later, more famous and widely heralded bands such as Radiohead.

Hollis in many ways carried a mantle left behind by the incomparable (and still massively underrated) Tim Buckley.

Spirit of Eden, years ago, was one of the albums that changed my musical life, outside of Classical music and prior to many other discoveries. Along with Laughing Stock, they are in a sense, Messaien's Quartet for the End of Time for their generation: elemental, overcome by stillness and miraculous evocation, highly personal, enraptured, longing and intensely spiritual. Two of the miracles of Rock music, especially considering Talk Talk's rather unremarkable beginnings as (more or less) a Duran Duran spin off.

RIP Mark.

Hopefully a positive that will come from this is that his music will now be more dedicatedly explored and assimilated by many newer listeners.

What do you think of Lorde's Melodrama compared to Pure Heroine? Which songs do you find notable?

No idea - haven't got around to it yet. If you have I would be interested in your thoughts though.

I have listened to it but I was interested in what you think of it. It forms an interesting contrast to Pure Heroine.

Hmmmm... Think Got a lot on my plate right now with Classical/Opera (including re-evaluating Wagner's 13-hour Ring! d'oh! ) ... and some Rock revisits (Pop at the moment) and some polishing up of my "Challenge Ratings" list towards a more uniform accuracy (revisiting the works I've marked + or - ). So, while I'm on a Pop buzz I might be able to squeeze it in if it's worthwhile?

Also, by roughly 2026 I plan on writing about VU and Nico so Seth can finally agree there aren't 36 U2 albums including bootlegs and demo tapes that are better than it.

Whoops - thinking aloud again!!! Laughing Hi Seth.

Anyway...

I generally don't prioritize Scaruffi-rated-6/10's unless someone that knows my criteria well and who's judgement has a track record that I trust (like yourself) recommends it as 7+.

I already have dozens of works to get to but I might give it a shot in the middle of it all...

Recent updates to various lists...

I am hoping I am just getting started on the "Greatest Paintings" lists. Recent updates to various lists...

Basically, doing my best to update all lists so that the ratings are aligned as uniformly as possible across genres/types of art (note that this is quite challenging to maintain ... some conclusions can lead to further "domino effects" upon several works among the same genre or lineage, and can even reach other art forms). Amidst doing so, I am in some cases drawing truly new, updated conclusions, while others have been more or less on wait or under consideration for as much as the last few months or even a year or more. With Jazz, these are a combo of aligning even more to Scaruffi's (damn you Scaruffi! Laughing ) while in other cases my view hasn't shifted or it's even become less aligned to his (such as Atlantis, Mu, Free Jazz...)

In terms of these last 2 weeks-plus of updates, it has been spurred more than anything by a general, slight drop in my estimates of Classical works (most by 0.1 or 0.2), and Film, which has had a "domino effect" across many other ratings in qualitative comparisons to Paintings, to Rock/Jazz, and so on. I've been wondering about dropping many of the Film & Classical works for a long time (but only alluded to & discussed, in PMs). I try to be as "certain" as possible of my re-rates before making them, but I would be lying if I didn't say also that these recent ones aren't causing me some pause ... seeing a few of Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Mahler's symphonies (and so on) -- long thought of as 8.8+ -- below that, even though still with very high ratings, causes cracks of doubt to peak through. But it "feels" mostly right when I listen to them in comparison to the higher ones so maybe I just need to get more used to it. I'm still feeling these out and checking back for accuracy in comparison to other works, so it remains possible I jumped the gun sooner than usual and that they may have less permanence/solidity than most updates. We'll see... To be continued...

Anyway, as follows...
