Such a classic record.
And a major improvement over Pretty Hate Machine which was a good record, but NIN was aiming for a more focused and more ambiental work now. With The Downward Spiral, they kept their previous style and sound, but this time around NIN had a much, much better production and they sounded darker, taking into consideration themes like depression, violence, mental illness and sex in a pretty deep and sinister way.
Without a doubt i think this is NIN's greatest work and one of the greatest albums of the 90's, and it was definitely a benchmark that set the bar for Industrial music to come... you can feel the all the desesperation, anger and sadness that Reznor it's trying to portray in here.
Piggy and A Warm Place are one of my favourite NIN songs, March of the Pigs is perfect and Closer and Hurt are probably their masterpieces, it's beautiful, it's dark, it's depressive, it's haunting it's NIN at their peak.

A goddamn masterpiece. Sometimes moving, always grim, mostly groovy. Also, minority view, I know, but... NIN "Hurt" > Johnny Cash "Hurt." Just one man's opinion.
Track picks
1. Mr. Self Destruct
4. March Of The Pigs
5. Closer
9. Big Man With A Gun
14. Hurt _________________ Inversion Verses

I concur with everyone's comments.
It is amazing.
A few years back, i went to a nin concert- hestation marks.
Have to state- good looking woman all around.
If your a nin fan, check out the live version , made in england, of trent reznor with
Gary Numan perfoming "cars". Its really really good.
