Grace by Jeff Buckley

Out of this world!! I have no idea why I left this album to rot in the queue...

I don’t think I need to say his voice is outstanding, and I’ve been trying to come up with a comp, but John Jacob Niles is the best approximation I can come up with. I love Niles’ vocals, but they weren’t this. Google suggested Rufus Wainwright (uh huh, Luigii)...

I didn’t have any expectations for this album in terms of musicianship, and it wouldn’t have mattered if I did. His guitar playing was just as killer as his vocals...he seemed to aspire to Steely Dan territory with his chord progressions and voicings.

The only track that I felt was less than stellar was “Eternal Life”, everything else was superb.

I am quite curious where this artist goes since I did peek a glance for his 2003 album and that cover got me really curious of what he is going to do sound wise. But back to this album. This is an album that I do find an excellent record. For starters I do love the vocals of Rufus. This has been the second time with the 2001 list where I get parallels from Beck by the way Rufus sings. But also how there is a lot of tracks that I was impressed by how quick they go by. It does make me more curious if a revisit of this album down the line will make me adore it way more than it does now. Because, that is probably my only complaint for this album. Where there were other songs that hit me a lot harder compared to others musically. But otherwise I had a fun time.

Grade:90

Now listen To Pimp A Butterfly Jameth. A hip hop/rap album that I believe you will like a lot more.

4 Visions by Eskaton

Zeuhl is a strange genre. It's basically prog, but with any of the pomp and pretention taken away and replaced with manic zaniness. I approve of this zaniness, and I'm happy to have another album from the niche genre under my belt.

Steppenwolf usually has great charts for this sort of thing.

WTF is this?

The Texas - Jerusalem Crossroads by Lift To Experience

It looks terrible, but apparently a few members of Cocteau Twins were involved with the mixing?

Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Taste of Rain... Why Kneel?
The Conet Project (This is almost 5 hours long, so keep that in mind)
Koenjihyakkei - Viva Koenji!!

Little John - Give The Youth A Try
Astral Matrix- Secret Broadcast
The Ullulators - Beyond The Gates Of Ull
Bel Canto- Birds of Passage

To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar

Oh yeah, Luigii, this is ten times the album that MBDTF is. Lamar has a lyrical density that Kanye can’t touch...not one wasted word. The jazzy atmosphere is incredible, and I don’t know if this is also considered maximalist, but if so, I don’t get the same feeling of ostentatiousness I got from Kanye. Way too much to process lyrically, I’d like to work through it at some point.

I’ll need to go through some rap canon to better gauge this album’s context within the genre, but I wouldn’t mind hearing more like this. I put on Good Kid right after, pretty disappointed so far. It’s pretty pedestrian by comparison...so, I’d call TPAB a quantum leap. Better luck with DAMN., maybe.

Birds Of Passage by Bel Canto

This is an eclectic dream pop album that is just on the verge of greatness. It maintains that "ethereal" atmosphere, that the genre does so well, throughout most of the album; however, tracks 6 and 7 don't really fit the rest. They're more of a straight synth pop affair, which pulls the listener out of the feeling of the album. I'm interested to listen to some of their other albums.

Here's some other dream pop albums. https://rateyourmusic.com/list/DanCruz/dream-pop/

Jameth, glad you liked TPAB; listen to the Arctic Monkeys' first.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I...ic Monkeys

That this is in the top 50 is now the biggest mystery of BEA, personally. Stale vocals. Tepid melody. Blockheaded rhythm. Riffs and progressions that could put a baby to sleep. Hamfisted strumming. Complete milktoast.

Nocturne by Wild Nothing

While clearly influenced by artists and genres I like a lot ('80s jangle pop, '90s shoegaze, '00s indie pop, and '10s dream pop) this consistent set of solid songs failed to connect with me in a way that makes it anything special that I would want to return to. Good, but nothing more. Pretty much the same way I felt about Gemini. 7.5/10 and 16/19 for 2012.

Jameth Daydream Nation is another favourite of mine.

Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth

First impression, this is such a perfect swirl of the hazy dreaminess of the Moody Blues, the droning noise of The Velvet Underground, and the confident peculiarity of the B-52’s. I’ll even call this music progressive, though I’m not sure if that’s a popular opinion. Truly beautiful music.

Reading about their style on Wikipedia...Moore talks about how they were forced to play cheap guitars early on, and developed their sound by experimenting with tunings, fret modifications, amplification, etc. This is the essence of great music, to me...much of the great music of the last century or so seems to be borne of varying circumstances. Anything from environment, to new instruments, to new opportunities or a lack thereof that can either permit the willing or force otherwise unwilling (perhaps) artists to experiment or adapt. Anyways, Sonic Youth strike me as a potentially fascinating case study in musical evolution.

This might have overtaken Remain In Light as my favorite album from this game, so far.

There’s some really good stuff there, but it has to be Bert Jansch, Purple.

Bert Jansch by Bert Jansch

Bert Jansch's debut album is some damn fine finger picking acoustic guitar bedroom folk. I really liked the atmosphere this album created of sounding like you are right there hearing one man and his guitar playing. His imperfect voice is great because of the imperfections, and he uses his voice in a passionate, emotive way, creating some real beauty to his songs. Good storytelling with simple but effective lyrics "Ask me why I sit and cry alone. I wish I knew, I wish I knew, If I knew, I'd know what to do", and some great songwriting. I especially liked some of the instrumentals, like Smokey River, Casbah, and Angie with their slightly warped and unexpected turns that was probably a bit unusual for folk instrumentals at the time. This is the first time I've heard of Bert Jansch but maybe he should be as welll known as the obvious comparison Nick Drake. I give this album an 8/10, and it males my '60s chart at 68/100, and 6/10 for 1965.

I'm stoked you liked Daydream Nation Jameth. Although there is a couple of albums on your list that I like more than this pick, I'm curious now to get your opinion on Siamese Dream.

Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins

Time for a new list to explore. Looking forward to this one as there seem to be a lot of obscure albums I haven't heard and probably otherwise wouldn't.
