Redid My chart from scratch and I think this is much more respectful of my tastes than me slowly moving one album or another, the top 10 hasn't changed much, but besides it there are some noticeable changes

Laksa & Phanaeng by Hayden

After what I can only describe as an extensive more miss-than-hit dig, I've whipped up a chart centred around the music of Southeast Asia. It's been in the works a while, but I've had difficulty rounding out the full 100. Keeping in mind the chart is still under construction, the last 20-ish albums on the list probably won't stay as more recommendations come along.

Indonesia and Singapore have turned out plenty of gems, while Timor and Laos have proven fairly elusive (for reasons in the countries to be fair). The stacks of unlabelled tapes from the 70's and 80's coming out of Myanmar, Indonesia and Vietnam are endless, but I've found the 2010's the deepest dive of the area. Accessibility is rising everywhere, and I can't help but feel the freshest and most unique sounds come the 2020's will be coming out of these countries (as well as Portugal, China and East Africa).

Let's be honest, this bit of the world is a blank in most of our listening logs, however, many genres are isolated in the area, and for better or worse, I've found most extremely unique. Progressions/breaks/verses/formats/production techniques, etc... these sounds aren't coming out of anywhere else. Not every album on the list is a knockout, and not every album on here is an easy listen, but I'll note every album on there caught my ear for some reason or another. Being said, where there are knockouts, they're stellar. The surge of late-60's early-70's gamelan can match any other niche genres anywhere.

Of course, there's plenty that is like everywhere else, that's just as excellent. The decade-long rise of twee/indie pop/shoegaze/dream pop in the area has been fantastic, and the effort's resulted in some of the decade's best works in those genres.

Order's vague, still working on placements. Chart's still growing and probably won't be done for a bit, but I'm getting there.

Enjoy Smile

Nice job, I'll hopefully be going through this and your other "around the world" charts soon. How are you finding these albums? Are there any record labels that you find and explore, or...?

Bandcamp's a blessing, and Spotify's making this far easier than it was even a few years ago. Albums are popping up everywhere more than ever. Youtube, shared tapes, vinyl rips... some people on location are digging through bins across South-East Asia and uploading what they think are worth people's time. Music's easier and cheaper to find and listen to more than ever, and I think it's worth taking advantage of that.

For this chart, I had to search by country. I barely knew any artists in them to begin with. Discogs has a pretty solid log via country, but sometimes it's mushed in with alternative pressings, etc... RYM has a pretty comprehensive list too (albeit, they have more multiple entries than I think they know).

I think my favourite digs are on Bandcamp. Easy, fast, and there's almost always free streams of the albums.

Hope you find a couple albums on there you like. Every album there is available somewhere online, I'm not trying to showcase some longlost tapes I happen to have or anything.

List is still under works of course, always digging. Smile
