Eli And The Thirteenth Confession by Laura Nyro
Hmm... I'm a bit torn. This went into territory I generally don't like, and then I think it was really something for the time. Overall though I'll settle with a 3/75.

Torch Of The Mystics by Sun City Girls

This is a weird album. A mix of experimental rock, psychedelic folk, middle eastern world music, surf rock, and who know's what else. Most of it worked but some of it was too strange for me. The opening track was my favourite, and The Shining Path was an interesting cover of a song I know but not where from. 7.5/10, and 28/45 for 1990.

A couple I've already heard now and of those I prefer the Leonard Cohen one, but I not that keen on it. See what you think.

Totally! Khomaniac is pretty awesome. I checked out the album again on my drive this morning. Still think it's good, competent thrash that doesn't really distinguish itself from the pack. B tops. Wink

Pakistani Pomade by Alexander Von Schlippenbach Trio

Free jazz is still the only of the musical extremes that gives me any pause. I'm not somebody who will ever say I don't get it (as in understand it musically and technically) but it's still a perplexing experience to listen to an album that is universally lauded, but not know exactly what it does differently to distinguish itself from anything else in the genre. I know that this was much better than Dave Burrell's "Echo" which was the last one that I had listened to, and it's one of the better Free Jazz albums that I've heard. That being said, I have no reason that I want to listen to this again anytime soon. The song "Moonbeef" is clearly the winner here. It's the most dynamic, instrumentally and tonally variable tack on the album. An interesting note is that I felt that this had more in common with EAI (Electroacoustic Improvisation) than any previous ones that I had listened to. EAI being something that I prefer, it seemed that, although it's certainly improvised, that the musicians certainly came into the performance with a goal and a sound in mind.

I don't know Taraf De Haïdouks by Taraf De Haïdouks, so I'll give it a listen too.

Suede by Suede

This is a different take on Britpop than bands like Blur and Pulp, as it focuses a lot more on guitars and less on poppy hooks. I prefer Blur's and Pulp's takes more. These songs sound big and loud, but somehow they also don't grab you at all. There's a lot of glam influence on this just like there is on Dog Man Star, which I think I preferred.

Chief, I have no idea what Flamingosis is but it sounds pretty great.

"Moonbeef" is great. I agree with you on the dynamics aspect of free jazz...it seems to be well under-utilized for the most part. A couple of weeks ago, I had actually gone looking for some quieter free jazz. "Cool" free jazz, I guess. But all roads really just lead back to semi-free, avant-garde jazz albums like Out To Lunch.

It's Your World by Gil Scott-Heron And Brian Jackson

Pieces Of A Man is high on my overall chart, so it's no surprise that I absolutely adore It's Your World. The only thing that kept from listening until now was the inconvenience of its unavailability via streaming / download. Scott-Heron is in top form with both his singing and spoken word. I love the jazz-funk instrumentation that Jackson has masterminded, and the band cooks live. Although the instrumentals are also amazing on Scott-Heron's solo work, this feels like a more balanced blend of emphasis between vocals and instrumentals. Essential listening. 4.5/5.

2. Love this album. It may be Nico's least favorite, but it's my favorite:

I'll need to check that out as it's slipped past me as well.

Pleasure Palette by Flamingosis

As the name suggests, this is a pleasant and relaxing little bit of everything. Funk, Soul, Hip Hop and whatever else he can sample. I mean the track that's most well-known on here samples music from Hey Arnold! and it's called "Football Head". So, once again, as long as you take your "serious music criticism" hat off, then you'll have a great time vibin' to this silky smooth album.

Who knew the roots to Nujabes lay in the Hey Arnold music? Very Happy

Baystate, just like you, I don't usually go for many live albums, so my favorite of those is Miles Smiles. It's a great blend of sophistication and listenability and one of my favorite Miles albums. It's with his second great quintet which was stacked from top to bottom with incredible musicians with one of my favorites of all time, Mr. Tony Williams. (Who was only 21 when this album was recorded. Shocked)

Songs From A Room by Leonard Cohen
I have this tug of war with Mr. Cohen. On one hand I really like his delivery and poetry and on the other hand I find it eventually incredibly boring. I think, for me, Mr. Cohen is not an album artist, but I love individual songs of his. I think it really comes down to it being more vocally driven than musically driven and for me that's a big blow. Still gets an 75/3 - borderline 80/3.5. Also I don't think I've heard a jew's harp this much in an album. Part of me likes it as a unique differentiator in folk music. Subtle.

2. German Oak intrigues me. Check it.
