It's sad I don't personally know anyone that knows knows more about movies or music than I do, when you guys always have lists like Applerill's where I've probably only heard about 25% of the movies on there.

Not sad at all! There is a phenomenon of some members having seen 60+ films from the current year, but some of them don't have the deep foundation in classic, pre-1967 movies you (and I and a few others) do (mainly going by from the genre polls), so no reason to be insecure. I have a couple of friends who potentially know as much about film as I do (maybe a little more), but unlike you, I live and grew up in a big city. Have a few friends who know more about music than I do, but I became friends with all but one of them when we worked together in a record store.

Honestly, living in a major metropolitan area makes such a huge difference. Chicago's Siskel Film Center is my main hangout spot, so not only do I meet lots of fellow filmmakers, but I've also met lots of cinephiles that have forgotten more movies than I've ever seen.
