i wouldn't mind it named in forms of musical skill such as virtuoso etc. Naming after bands or popularity will probably be disliked by certian members though

I agree with that, I think it needs to be agnostic to any band or type of music. I think the music grades isn't a bad idea, and the career path (with a bit of tweaking) could be another one.

I think I'd like to avoid any of the current rank names, if possible, so that the new and old ranks can't be compared (they are entirely different in the way they are calculated so the comparison would be false and it might be misleading to people).

Give them any labels you wish. Often awards are designated by precious metals, gemstones, or colors. It doesn't matter which order, just choose. (Often gold is considered higher than silver, but not in USA military). Why not just use the numbers? They actually have meaning, for instance: Level 1, Tier 1, Plateau 1, Circle 1, Ring 1, Track 1 or Cloud 1. It doesn't matter since you will change them again someday.

the only thing is, I don't really want to re-use any of the current names and I think some of these don't sound that catchy.

If anyone has any thoughts on how to improve this and make it a bit more exciting, please chime in... Mr. Green

Just a thought here, but you could have the first few levels merely called "level #" or "tier #". Ex: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, etc.
And then start actually naming them at the level in which users can have a 100 album chart. It would make that transition to the "100 club" more spectacular, in a way.

(Side note: I personally like "Classic" as a level name, since it is associated with albums quite a bit.)

It sounds like using level numbers is the right thing to do, and maybe when Level 8 is achieved you get to name your own rank (that's along the lines of what was spoken about elsewhere).
