What do you rate all the Stones albums between the buttons debut and Aftermath? That includes:
12×5 (US)
The Rolling Stones No. 2 (UK)
The Rolling Stones, Now! (US)
Out of Our Heads (UK)
December's Children (US)

Edit: Also Between the Buttons UK version! Why is the US version included??

Maybe 4.5s, 5s, 5.5s? Would need to revisit. Out of Our Heads UK might be a high-5.5 to low-6, but under the US version (which has probably the two best songs: Satisfaction, The Last Time plus Spider and the Fly).

Between the Buttons US: Let's Spend the Night Together + Ruby Tuesday superior to UK counterparts, even though the UK one might still be 6.5 or 7.

What do you think of Farrah Abraham's My Teenage Dream Ended? Such a bizarre record.

I'm going to give it a 3.5, but it has potential for a higher rating. It is fairly interesting, whether accidentally or not. Sounds like she is caged and feels trapped, possibly even a cry for help, between the perpetually auto-tuned vocals and the incongruous beats/arrangements. Somewhat compelling throughout ... didn't ever seem truly affecting, but mildly and I am a bit split on whether this is pure novelty or something more. Maybe later listens will reveal more or maybe it just is what it is.

I expect 4.5-5 for 12X5, No. 2, and December's Children; 5 for Now!, 5.5 for Out of Our Heads.

Between the Buttons UK is almost as great as the US version, I like Please Go Home and Back Street Girl isn't bad either. The reason I was asking was because I thought the UK version was the "definitive" one. My ideal version would go: First three tracks of US version, then track 2 onwards from UK version. Likewise, Aftermath ideally would be the UK album + Paint It Black at the end.

Any recent thoughts on the Dirty Beaches albums from years back? Or his solo stuff that's more recent and under his real name of Alex Zhang Hungtai?

Seem to remember you digging Drifters/Love is the Devil, and you might still have Stateless in your 21st century list, I've not checked.

Due a mass change of rating scale myself, don't think I'll go as crazy as HectorG on RYM, but something needs doing!

Hope you're staying safe and keeping as sane as is still interesting good sir.

Thanks, haha!

Drifters/Love is the Devil has been everywhere between 7 and 8 for me (currently 7 but was an 8 and/or 7.5 (back and forth) for a long time, and the possibility still hangs) and I've never really felt definite about its rating at any of those junctures. On one hand it's clearly indebted to Suicide, Joy Division, Eno, but on the other feels pretty otherworldly and expressionist, and can be quite an emotional experience. I'll have to revisit it. Stateless seems more original and even more personal to me, and more profound. It has stuck at 7.5 for a while and pointed towards 8/10 a couple times. Seems to be the more stable of the 2. But he is a tough artist to crack. Haven't heard the solo stuff yet. What would you recommend the most?

Divine Weight from a couple of years back I thought was really good, more saxophone based than the two released this year. Longone is more ambient and jazzy, and Young Gods Run Free is a collage of phone recordings and a real interesting listen.

Best of the lot, in my opinion, is Love Theme. A collective that doesn't appear to have done anything since, and their self titled album. Moodier, drone and jazz indebted. The closing track is up there with the best of Stateless and Love is the Devil's most affecting tracks.

Top 10+ Music, Movies, and Visual Art of the Week (2020)

NOTE: This is a log of my favorite works of music, cinema and/or visual art for the given week. The rankings here will not necessarily parallel my overall rankings, as these are only what I favored for the given week. To qualify for inclusion, the work must be rated 6.8/10 or better (or at least was at some point during the week). This log will also include updated ratings for my various lists (below the "Top 10+" section)

Below that, there will be a running listing of my "Top 50 Works of Art of the Year". This is simply a log of my favorite art over the course of this whole year, whether old or new to me. This list is cumulative, week-to-week, until its final standings at the end of the year.

Recommendations and suggestions welcome. For my criteria, go here: http://www.besteveralbums.com/phpBB2/vi...hp?t=15503

Bold = Newly added
Bold + Italics = Was already listed but recently upgraded/downgraded

Same Trailer Different Park - Kacey Musgraves (2013) ...Despite Scaruffi's 7/10 endorsement months ago, and a strong rec or two before that from Baystate (maybe someone else here too?), this is still surprising to me. But it is pretty impeccable country-pop songwriting that strikes a magical balance between melancholy, a lingering or promised happiness barely in hand or just out of grasp, a consistently immaculate touch and composure, an infectious bounce and often playful "wordsmithing". Within this album lies several perfect little vignettes, and inside those are little gems, humble and sparkling ingenuities of arrangement, craft, development...

Misc notes/updates...

I've been extensively studying many paintings, re-evaluating many works and updating my "Greatest Paintings" list (Lounge forum) plus misc selections below 7.3 (scroll down on that list and there are hundreds of "extended" selections including probably over 300 that haven't been re-rated (but have "old" ratings). I've also been re-evaluating some sculpture/architecture (mainly Michelangelo).

By study/re-eval, I mainly mean:
1. My own "direct analysis" of the work overall and up close ...viewing the brush strokes or combos of brush strokes for an eval of "emotional sensation" and to get a good idea of the feeling or personality or psychology (etc) invested into the work, and if it conveys, advances, imbues, enhances the overall emotions/themes the work is about (and if that, in itself, is significant, creative, impressive and so on). "Direct analysis" meaning without any help outside of maybe learning the story or the main theme the work is depicting/referring to (if I don't know already). For any analysis I will usually use the highest quality internet images and videos showing the original work in its live setting, and will refer to HQ art books as needed for certain works and as needed for imagery.

2. watching or listening to lectures/analysis/talks by art historians to see if they can illuminate more on the work or artist (also sometimes analysis/talks of other people that demonstrate legit and compelling knowledge/evaluation of the artist/works)

3. watching or listening to lectures/analysis/talks by art historians covering the lives and various works of these artists and what was behind their purposes and conveyance in their art, to see if it might illuminate more about their themes, convictions, expressiveness

4. revisiting the work and my original analysis, comparing with other's analysis, seeing what I agree/disagree with, seeing if there is anything I need to add or subtract, then drawing a new or updated conclusion if necessary from the original one, or just keeping it the same.

Artists/works I've been re-evaluating pretty extensively over the last few weeks are:
-Michelangelo (not just Sistine Chapel but including his sculptures and some architecture, reviewing his life, convictions, etc)
-Leonardo (all his paintings, reviewing his life, convictions ... Note: I updated the Mona Lisa analysis for those interested)
-Picasso (many of his paintings, reviewing his life, convictions)
-Klimt (many of his paintings, reviewing his life, convictions)
-Van Gogh (many of his paintings, reviewing his life, convictions)
-Dali (several paintings, reviewing his life, convictions)
-Raphael (his most essential paintings)
-Bruegel (his most essential paintings)
-Vermeer (his most essential paintings)
-Piero Della Francesca (essential paintings, life, convictions)
-Botticelli (his most essential paintings, life, convictions)
-Ernst (his most essential paintings, life, convictions)
-Chagall (learning more about his life, convictions)

Aside from those main ones, several other misc works that I had been wanting to get back around to (from previous evals months or years ago).

Needless to say, it has been an astounding and rewarding experience in many ways. Revisiting Michelangelo and Leonardo in particular was very moving and intensely profound. So much so that I spent about a week caring about little else (art wise) and could not stop looking over just their works, hardly able to devote myself if I tried to move on to anyone else.

Concurrently, I've been revisiting several Classical music works that I'll probably have revised ratings for in the not-too-distant future.

I've also began updating my criteria page, including the whole ratings scale, with all the "combo ratings" being revised (small differences near and at the top, bigger differences below 7.5). I am also mid some revisions for the descriptive section of the page (just rough draft at the moment).

The changes in ratings scale will inevitably result in some ratings adjustments across all my lists.

Additionally, Scaruffi has been updating his cinema ratings more consistently than ever. So I'll probably get that urge to revisit some films in the near future, or watch some new ones!

I should also give a shout out to Facetious. Way back in the day, he urged me to consider The Books Lemon of Pink an 8/10 or one of the best albums of its decade. I rated it 7/10 at the time and told him I would get around to revisiting it (but never did). Lo and behold, Scaruffi just upgraded it to an 8/10 (from 7.5) so maybe it's time?

Anyway, definitely all about paintings at the moment so especially accepting of recommendations, suggestions, discussion, etc, at this time. Here, if you want, but you can find my Paintings page in the Lounge forum.
